Women's Health

Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It's your place in the world; it's your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live — Mae C. Jemison, first African-American woman astronaut

Women have specific health needs and concerns. A case in point...although survival rates for breast and cervical cancer have improved, heart attack and ovarian cancer continue to be aggressive killers of women.

Cardiovascular disease claims more female lives than breast cancer, accidents and diabetes combined. Researchers have only recently discovered that women's heart attack symptoms are often vague and very different from those classic symptoms that we've all heard about for years.

Ovarian cancer is also not easily diagnosed because its initial symptoms are mild, often attributed to other causes and there is no specific diagnostic test for ovarian cancer. There is an 85-93% survival rate if ovarian cancer is diagnosed at Stage I - contained within the ovary (or ovaries). However, less than 20% of ovarian cancer cases are diagnosed at this early stage.

Yet there is still no adequate screening test for either. You know yourself better than anyone else. When your body produces warning symptoms, listen to it. And don't just assume that your doctor's explanation is right.

Go Red for Women typifies the myriad of organizations that are dedicated to improving the health of all women - "Our mission is to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke. That single purpose drives all we do. The need for our work is beyond question."
