A Two-Year Journey With Undiagnosed Autoimmune Thyroiditis
I must have retyped this about 100 times in the last few days. To be honest, I am not sure where I should start with this crazy, upside-down journey of mine. I’ll just let my fingers do the talking. Two years ago, my life changed in what seemed like in an instant. My health did a complete 180. I was a healthy, energetic, spunky, outgoing 40-year-old.
Suddenly, I was experiencing high heart rates that would start up out of nowhere. I would wind up in the Emergency Room with a heart rate of between 125 bpm and 215 bpm. I should have a VIP pass for the ER, since I was constantly in and out of there with tachycardia, anxiety, getting EKGs and a bag of saline. The Emergency Room was like…

I started to feel off in the summer of 2019. I couldn’t sleep, was so tired during the day that I could barely finish my work, and felt hungover every morning even though I wasn’t drinking alcohol at the time.
Understanding and Diagnosing Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism
A lot of us at goop have thyroids that are on the fritz. And a lot of us have found navigating treatment for the autoimmune disease Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the US, to be a fairly complex challenge—despite the disease being relatively simple to diagnose.
As Zoe Saldana Shows, Maybe You Should Check Your Thyroid
Even doctors may misdiagnose a thyroid problem as a psychiatric or emotional problem because they do not order blood tests to check for thyroid problems...even though these tests are relatively easy and inexpensive to check
Hashimoto's Thyroiditis: We Can Win This Battle!
Thyroid disease is an epidemic affecting up to 20 percent of American women. The most common cause of low thyroid today is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto's Thyroiditis. Like all autoimmune disease, the main feature is the production of antibodies that attack the healthy tissue of the body. In this case, thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) and or thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb) are created against the thyroid.
Speaking the Truth About Thyroid Disease: What Doctors Don't Tell You
I've cured an incurable disease. For more than a decade, I was told that my autoimmune disorder, Hashimoto's thyroiditis, would leave my thyroid in permanent disrepair and that I would be taking a pill every day for the rest of my life. What I was told was wrong.
The Tyranny of Blood Levels
So for about 12 years, I've been living with an autoimmune disease. As autoimmune diseases go, it's the one you want to get: a condition known as Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, which slowly kills off your thyroid. The diagnosis was a bit of a freak: my primary care physician caught the spike in thyroid hormone which happens at the very start of the disease, tested for the antibodies, and gave me a diagnosis. For twelve years I've been waiting to find out when, exactly, my thyroid would give up the ghost.

10 reasons why Hashimoto’s patients don’t get better
Often times mainstream doctors don’t test for thyroid antibodies because it won’t change how they treat you with Hashimoto’s. The only solution they have is thyroid hormone replacement medication, but Hashimoto’s is more than a thyroid condition. It is an autoimmune disease.

Thyroid Awareness
Hashimoto’s thyroiditis may not cause symptoms for many years and may remain undiagnosed until an enlarged thyroid gland or abnormal blood tests are discovered as part of a routine examination. When symptoms do develop, they are either related to local pressure in the neck caused by the goiter itself or to the low levels of thyroid hormone.

When I was diagnosed with thyroid disease in 2009, I didn’t know where to turn. I was constantly exhausted. I gained weight. And I was depressed. But today, thanks to expert advice, support from people going through the same experience, and great doctors who gave me safe, effective tools to fight the disease, I feel like a new woman.
EndocrineWeb
Because the thyroid is essentially coming under attack from invading cells, it isn't able to produce as much thyroid hormone as it normally would. Eventually, this causes hypothyroidism. And in extreme cases, the immune cells can cause the thyroid to become enlarged and inflamed to the point that it produces a visible mass in the neck—a goiter.
MedicineNet
Symptoms and signs of Hashimoto's thyroiditis resemble those of hypothyroidism generally and are often subtle. They are not specific (which means they can mimic the symptoms of many other conditions) and are often attributed to aging. Patients with mild hypothyroidism may have no signs or symptoms.
NIDDK
In Hashimoto’s disease, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing inflammation and interfering with its ability to produce thyroid hormones. Large numbers of white blood cells called lymphocytes accumulate in the thyroid. Lymphocytes make the antibodies that start the autoimmune process.
Patient
Hashimoto's thyroiditis is named after Dr. Hakaru Hashimoto, who first described the condition in 1912. It is part of the spectrum of autoimmune disease and the most common cause of goitrous hypothyroidism in non-iodine-deficient areas. However, there is also an atrophic form of autoimmune thyroiditis (Ord's thyroiditis) which is more common in Europe.
WomensHealth.gov
Hashimoto’s disease is about 7 times more common in women than in men. It can occur in teens and young women, but more commonly shows up in middle age. People who get Hashimoto’s disease often have family members who have thyroid or other autoimmune diseases.
