The assessment of these patients is particularly challenging due to physiological and anatomic changes that result in atypical presentations of relatively common diseases. The choice of therapeutic and diagnostic procedures in pregnant patients is likewise challenging and must include an assessment of safety both to the patient and the fetus. Thus, the assessment of pregnant patients with acute abdominal pain requires a structured approach that considers both obstetric and non-obstetric causes of abdominal pain.
