Happy stories are often told about the thousands of people each year who are saved by the Heimlich maneuver, like Steve John, a PGA Tour tournament official who was rescued last year by the director and actor Clint Eastwood. In 1976 the Heimlich was used to clear a tracheal obstruction in Ronald Reagan, and in 1981 it saved Mayor Edward I. Koch of New York City. When an editor of mine choked on food with no one around to help, she leaned over the back of a chair and did a successful Heimlich on herself.

What people rarely hear about are the many instances in which the Heimlich fails to dislodge an object that obstructs a person’s breathing. Too often when this happens, the victim dies.…

Even though he came up with the technique in 1974, he never had the opportunity to use it on a choking victim until May 23rd of this year. He administered the treatment to save the life of an 87-year-old woman choking on a morsel of meat at Deupree House, a senior residence in Cincinnati where they both lived.
