International Neurosurgery Education: Are We Keeping Up with the Times?

The desire to help strengthen the growth of neurosurgery in low-income countries is a sentiment shared by many of us. Yet, there are many impediments to organizing capacity-building efforts — these impediments can include personal, academic and financial commitments. Some neurosurgeons are in a position of making neurosurgical training in low-resource areas an important focus of their career. Many more of us are actively engaged in some international neurosurgery work. But is enough being done? How can we best align our efforts to ensure sustainable growth?

The Congress of Neurological Surgeons exists to enhance health and improve lives worldwide through the advancement of education and scientific exchange.

Neurosurgical Society of America

The Society is a non-profit public benefit society. Our objectives are to enhance the advancement of the specialty of neurological surgery in America by furnishing a forum for intimate exchange of ideas and information among a group of representative neurosurgeons and by fostering a personal acquaintanceship among its members to make free and confident exchange of information possible.

Society of Neurological Surgeons

The Society of Neurological Surgeons is the American society of leaders in neurosurgical residency education, and is the oldest neurosurgical society in the world. Academic department chairman, residency program directors, and other key individuals comprise the active membership of the Society. The membership is limited to 200 active members, while senior, inactive and honorary members fill out the remainder of the Society.

Southern Clinical Neurological Society

The Southern Clinical Neurological Society is an organization of clinical and academic neurologists and other professionals dedicated to neurology and the neurosciences. The primary purpose of the SCNS is education with a goal of improving the clinical practice of neurology and the care of neurological patients.

Women in Neurosurgery

The mission of Women in Neurosurgery is to educate, inspire, and encourage women neurosurgeons to realize their professional and personal goals, and to serve neurosurgery in addressing the issues inherent to training and maintaining a diverse and balanced workforce.

World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies

The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies aspires to promote global improvement in neurosurgical care. The mission of WFNS is to work together with our member societies to improve worldwide neurosurgical care, training and research to benefit our patients.

American Brain Tumor Association

The American Brain Tumor Association was the first national nonprofit organization dedicated solely to brain tumors. For 40 years, the ABTA has been providing comprehensive resources that support the complex needs of brain tumor patients and caregivers, as well as the critical funding of research in the pursuit of breakthroughs in brain tumor diagnosis, treatment and care.

Association of Neurosurgical Physician Assistants

ANSPA is a professional organization that was created to serve and represent Neurosurgical Physician Assistants. This is done through education and outreach. ANSPA is a volunteer led organization which prides itself on providing quality educational meetings for it's members and other interested providers.

International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society

The Society has been a driver of and a participant in the widespread adoption of the technique of stereotactic radiation delivery as an integral part of the therapeutic armamentarium for a wide array of benign and malignant disorders. As technology continues to evolve, allowing ever more precise and conformal treatments, the ISRS will remain on the forefront of elucidating best practices and the clinical outcomes of the technique.

National Neurotrauma Society

The National Neurotrauma Society seeks to accelerate research that will provide answers for clinicians and ultimately improve the treatments available to patients. The National Neurotrauma Society will continue to promote excellence in the field by providing opportunities for scientists, establishing standards in both basic and clinical research, encouraging and supporting research, and promoting liaisons with other organizations that influence the care and cure of neurotrauma victims.

American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons

The American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons is a scientific and educational association of neurosurgeons and orthopedists. The Academy was founded in 1977 in order to improve the quality of care for patients requiring expertise in these two major surgical specialties by setting high standards for training, credentialing, peer review and ongoing surgical education.

American Association of Neurological Surgeons

The American Association of Neurological Surgeons is the organization that speaks for all of neurosurgery. The AANS is dedicated to advancing the specialty of neurological surgery in order to promote the highest quality of patient care.

American Board of Neurological Surgery

The primary purposes of the American Board of Neurological Surgery are to conduct examinations of candidates who voluntarily seek certification, and to issue Certificates to those who meet the requirements of the Board and satisfactorily complete its examinations. Certification by the ABNS is based on review and evaluation of the applicant's educational, training, and practice qualifications, as well as successful completion of written and oral examinations.

American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery

The broad aim of the American Board of Pediatric Neurological Surgery is to encourage the study, improve the practice and elevate the standards of pediatric neurological surgery, and thereby to advance the cause of public health.

American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons

The American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons was founded in January 1978 by eighteen North American neurosurgeons and was dedicated to the advancement of all aspects of the subspecialty of pediatric neurological surgery. The Society's membership has grown to include virtually all North American neurosurgeons who devote a substantial majority of their practice to the care of pediatric patients, and now has well over 100 neurosurgeons on its active membership roster.

American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery

The mission of the American Society for Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgery is to foster the use of image guided and physiologically guided surgeries that alter the function of the nervous system, for treatment of neurological disorders. The Society will improve patient care, educate neurosurgeons, other physicians, allied medical specialists, and the general public, support basic and clinical research, and provide a forum at national and international meetings to fulfill these goals.

Canadian Neurological Sciences Federation

We are a not-for-profit federation, managing five national specialty societies that deal with the management and prevention of neurologic conditions and diseases.

Caribbean Association of Neurological Surgeons

CANS aims to promote the development of Neurological Surgery in accordance with the standards of the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies in the territories of the Caribbean through annual conferences and the exchange of ideas between members with the goal of improving the quality of neurosurgical care delivered to the inhabitants of the region.

European Association of Neurosurgical Societies

The European Association of Neurosurgical Societies is a fast-growing, independent association, both of European neurosurgical societies and of individual neurosurgeons all over the world. Our aim is to enable our members to enhance the care they deliver to their patients by facilitating the exchange of scientific information at the highest level. In pursuit of this goal, we arrange a wide range of meetings, symposia and educational courses, including the European Congress of Neurosurgery and the highly regarded European Training Courses in Neurosurgery.

European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery

The European Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery (ESPN) promotes the health of children in Europe and throughout the world by encouraging the ethical transmission and exchange of neuroscientific information and techniques related to Pediatric Neurosurgery.

Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery

The Indian Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery was formed in the year 1990 after hosting the 17th Annual Conference of International Society for Pediatric Neurosurgery in 1989 in Bombay. The Society has steadily grown in strength and now has 243 members. The Society was founded to promote the art and science of pediatric neurosurgery in India and to improve the welfare of children in India.

Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia

The Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia acts as a common forum for neurosurgeons and physicians from other related specialties, to promote the development of neurosurgery and ancillary fields in Malaysia, and to advance the professional interests of physicians in these fields.

Neurosurgical Society of Australasia

The Neurosurgical Society of Australasia is a professional not for profit organisation which promotes the study and advancement of the art and science of neurosurgery. Membership to the Society is voluntary and currently includes approximately 95% of neurosurgeons in Australia and New Zealand.

Society of British Neurological Surgeons

The Society of British Neurological Surgeons was founded in 1926 and is one of the world's oldest national neurosurgical societies. We currently have just over 600 members. The purpose of the Society is the study and advancement of Neurosurgery. This is achieved through the scientific meetings of the Society, through publications arising from deliberations about aspects of Neurosurgical practice and delivery of Neurosurgical services.

Western Neurosurgical Society

The Western Neurosurgical Society was formed in 1955 by 29 neurosurgeons who were interested in creating a small, more intimate regional society in contrast to the large national organizations. Membership is offered to neurosurgeons as well as specialists in the collateral fields of neurology, neuroanatomy, neuro-ophthalmology, neuropathology, neurophysiology, and neuroradiology. Though limited in actual membership, the Society welcomes as a guest any medical physician who wishes to attend the annual meeting.
