A Long Time Coming

There seemed to me a time when rheumatologists were the poorest, worst dressed, most depressed subspecialists in internal medicine. With not much to offer patients except pain relief and coping skills, rheumatology fellowships became underenrolled and attractive to a certain type of resident who did not want the power of a proceduralist or the pressure of routinely facing life-and-death situations.

Perhaps decision-making then allowed for more handwringing and less impact. What specific type of person would choose to do this? These rheumatologists are now our spokespersons and leaders, and maybe there’s some residual thinking from the bad old days.
