History of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Traditional Chinese Medicine has been around for thousands of years. Although the first recorded history of TCM dates back over 2,000 years, it is believed that the origins of TCM goes back more than 5,000 years. Bear in mind that, apart from the recorded documents much of what is said about the origins of Chinese medicine is more legend than history.
According to the legend the origins of traditional Chinese medicine is traced back to the to three legendary emperors/mythical rulers: Fu Xi, Shen Nong, and Huang Di. Historians believe that Shen Nong and Fu Xi were early tribal leaders. Fu Xi was a cultural hero who developed the trigrams of Yi Jing (I Ching) or Book of Changes.…

Classics of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The National Library of Medicine (NLM) holds approximately 2,000 volumes of Chinese medical classics. Here we display a few of the earliest and most interesting texts from the NLM collection. Also included are portraits of a few significant figures in early Chinese medicine whose contributions range from acupuncture to the pioneering uses of herbal medicines to the concept of Yin and Yang. Through the exhibit, we hoped to draw attention to a fascinating part of NLM's historical resources.
Origins & History of Chinese Medicine
The archeological discoveries of the last few decades reveal that during the two centuries of the Western Han dynasty (206 BC-3 AD), Chinese medical thought underwent a process of comprehensive standardization and systematization. This newly emerging image is in contrast with the views of the Chinese medical tradition tracing the origins of their primary medical canons to pre-Qin times.

China Academy of Traditional Chinese Medicine
The Academy consists of the following institutions: Xi Yuan Hospital (1st Institute of Clinical Medicine. The Institute of Medical Literature, the Institute of Information on Traditional Chinese China. At present, the total staffs of the Academy are over 4, 300, of which more than 3,000 are scientific researchers. There are over 790 professors, associate professors of persons with equivalent qualification, with a complete range of departments now at the Academy.
