5 important facts and misconceptions about Asperger's syndrome
We have a natural, if often regrettable, tendency to fear the things we don't understand. In the aftermath of the Newtown shootings that claimed the lives of 20 young children, the blogosphere seized on unconfirmed reports that the alleged shooter, Adam Lanza, was once diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, and the term rocketed up Google's search charts.
A controversial first-person essay titled "I am Lanza's mother," which illustrated a mother's fear of violence from her own Asperger's-afflicted son, was widely distributed by websites ranging from Gawker to the Huffington Post, garnering millions of pageviews and inciting bloggers everywhere to weigh in (some more successfully than…

“It’s up to them to decide if they want to be named after someone like him.”
What happened to Asperger’s syndrome?
Aspies’ identify with clinical label Despite these views, Asperger’s syndrome has become societally popular, with characters in movies such as The Accountant and television shows such as Community being portrayed as either having the condition or displaying traits commonly associated with it. An interesting social phenomenon also began to occur in the early 2010s, in which those with Asperger’s began to personally identify with their clinical label — referring to themselves as “Aspies” or other similar terms that represent their unique attributes and characteristics.
Asperger Syndrome Seems More Prevalent Among Kids Who Identify as Opposite Gender
A small study that's the first of its kind in the United States suggests that children who identify as a gender other than they one they were born with are more likely to have Asperger syndrome than children in the general population.
Aspergers is Not the Same as ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder)!
eople with Asperger’s usually collect labels like ADHD, anxiety disorders, or bipolar disorder before they’re diagnosed with AS. The label that annoys me is Oppositional Defiant Disorder. Is there a difference between people whose Asperger’s-related behavior is misunderstood and ODD? I find that ODD is sometimes simply a description of behavior without a cause.

The four members of Asperger’s Are Us decided a long time ago that their main goal would be to amuse themselves. But after nearly a decade of laughing and writing punch lines together, Asperger’s Are Us, which is probably the only comedy troupe made up of people on the autism spectrum, is on the cusp of comedic success.
Asperger’s History of Overdiagnosis
Many people, now inappropriately labeled as Aspies, make the world a richer, more interesting place. Their quirky absorptions in, say, physics, baseball stats or investment strategies add enormously to human advancement. Unlike adults with a Peter Pan syndrome who never move beyond adolescence, children and young adults with significant social disabilities tend to grow quite effectively into their adult lives.
David Finch shares experience living with Asperger’s
Finch has written for both The New York Times and Huffington Post on Asperger’s syndrome, which is also a central theme of his book. “The Journal of Best Practices” details a two-year period after his diagnosis of Asperger’s, five years into his marriage with Kristen. “I just wanted to write a book to make people laugh,” he said of the book. “I’ll write about how I ruined someone’s life.”
Everybody Has Asperger's Now

It’s Asperger Syndrome ... or Is It?
When Asperger syndrome is eliminated from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fewer people like me will receive the diagnosis, support and accommodation they need to succeed in school and the workplace, with the consequences of needless suffering and lost talent and productivity.
Letting Go of Asperger’s
Months after our son was diagnosed, the label officially disappeared. And that turned out to be a good thing.
My Life of Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome
Last year the American Psychiatric Association dropped the label and the diagnostic characteristics of AS from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Instead, it lumped the condition with three other Autism Spectrum Disorders under the generic name, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Maybe this was in anticipation of the USA signing the petition to the UN WHO for a more holistic approach. Alternatively, maybe it was prophetic, who knows?
Saying Goodbye To Asperger’s Syndrome
Quirky, nerdy fictional characters have brought Asperger’s syndrome into the realm of popular culture in recent years. But, as of late May, the disorder that has defined these characters, and been applied to a growing number of real people, will no longer exist thanks to revisions to psychiatric disorders in the new version of the DSM, the DSM-5.
Telling the difference between autism and Asperger’s
For children with autism, they might take the first step like all other children, but the first word and emotional communication might be a long way off. In some cases, it may never come. The journey is different for a child with Asperger’s disorder. The first word may be early, followed by an explosion of language. Soon parents start wondering whether he might be gifted. But these thoughts quickly become sidelined by concern as the child enters school and seems to struggle with friendships, play, and seems rigid and obsessive, despite a fantastic vocabulary.
