You’ve seen the brightly-colored tape on the arms of tennis players, the legs of soccer players, the shoulders of beach-volleyball players and along the heels and calves of runners at your local half-marathon—but what is it and why are they wearing it? Kinesiology tape, or elastic therapeutic tape, is the hypoallergenic, latex-free and stretchy secret of athletes and fitness junkies.

Created by Japanese chiropractor Kenzo Kase, the tape is said to help stabilize muscles and joints, especially in those with chronic pain problems.
