Nitrate vasodilators and sodium nitroprusside

Nitrate vasodilators, or nitrovasodilators/nitrodilators if you prefer unnecessary portmanteaus, all should be called "nitric oxide donors" if we really wanted our nomenclature to have some scientific accuracy. These are some of the oldest drugs in the oldest book. We are talking about the sort of book you might find being thrown out by the medical school library because of extensive mold damage.

 Nitrate vasodilators and sodium nitroprusside

It is somewhat difficult to discuss this class, because the representative members are so different. All attempts to present nitrates as "class rules and their exceptions" has failed, as the drugs in question have so little in common apart from their mechanism of action.

Isosorbide

The recommended starting dose of Isosorbide mononitrate extended-release tablets is 30 mg (given as a single 30 mg tablet or as 1/2 of a 60 mg tablet) or 60 mg (given as a single tablet) once daily. A

Nitroglycerin

Nitroglycerin is truly a wonder drug. It dilates coronary arteries and decreases the workload of the heart, two factors responsible for the discomfort. Yet many anginal patients use the drug only sparingly, if at all - Dr. Bernard Lown

Nitroprusside

Depending on the desired concentration, the solution containing 50 mg of sodium nitroprusside injection must be further diluted in 250 mL to 1000 mL of sterile 5% dextrose injection. The diluted solution should be protected from light, using the supplied opaque sleeve, aluminum foil, or other opaque material. It is not necessary to cover the infusion drip chamber or the tubing.

Cardiovascular Pharmacology Concepts

The primary pharmacologic action of nitrodilators, arterial and venous dilation, make these compounds useful in the treatment of hypertension, heart failure, angina and myocardial infarction. Another beneficial action of nitrodilators is their ability to inhibit platelet aggregation.

MedicineNet

Nitrates are medications used for treating or preventing heart pain (angina, chest pain) caused by heart disease, usually of the arteries in the heart.

ScienceDirect

The nitrovasodilators produce their biological effects either by releasing NO or closely related molecules that are converted to NO in cells. The most commonly employed nitrovasodilators are the organic nitrates and sodium nitroprusside.
