Thin May Be In -- But Not in the Hair World!
It's very disheartening to realize that the great mass of hair you once had has now taken a grand bow. Why are more women now experiencing the plight of hair loss when many thought this problem only afflicted men?
"Startling" is the correct word to describe this dilemma. The question one must ask is"why?" There can be countless reasons why women are experiencing this disheartening challenge. As a hairstylist that has seen a vast array of clients, this experience has afforded me the opportunity to study personal clients and compile information to share. Some of the data has been gathered from my own personal experiences, having shed a few…

Alopecia isn’t a haircut

Starting to thin out? Hair loss doesn’t have to lead to baldness
Hair loss is no longer an inevitable march to baldness. Medical advances over recent decades mean male hair loss can be treated. And it need not break the bank. The cause of male pattern baldness is well established as an act of nature not nurture. Identical twins go bald at the same age, rate and pattern irrespective of diet, lifestyle or stress levels.
What kind of hair loss is totally normal, and when you should be worried
Humans put a lot of time and effort into thinking of ways to hold onto their hair. Globally, the market for hair loss products is expected to reach $11.8 billion by 2024. Donald Trump’s wispy comb-over is just one example of our fascination with people’s ‘dos—or lack thereof. We all lose hair throughout our lives, but how much loss is normal?
Do Short Haircuts Cause Balding?
There are many types of hair loss, such as autoimmune-related alopecia areata, where people lose hair in circles on the scalp and body, and telogen effluvium, a period of shedding commonly experienced after surgery or stress. One of the most common forms is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male- (or female-) pattern hair loss. It affects around 80% of men by the time they are 80 years old (and about 50% of women, though it’s less obvious), and is characterized by thinning at the top of the head and receding at the front.
Health Check: why does women’s hair thin out?
Balding in men is so common it doesn’t raise an eyebrow. But when a woman starts to lose hair, it can be extremely distressing. Will she end up bald, too?
Male Baldness: Common Causes Of Hair Loss
As men age, they're most likely to notice it on their heads first. Hair loss affects 20 per cent of men in their 20s, 30 per cent of men in their 30s and so on, according to hair expert Dr. Alan Bauman of Bauman Medical Group in Florida.

The Unpredictable Genetics Of Male-Pattern Baldness
If there is any consolation for men (or at least, heterosexual men) distressed about hair loss, if it was a phenotype that was repulsive to females, the gene variants would have been weeded out a long time ago, by sexual selection. Many of us find bald heads very manly and attractive.
