Confessions of a Balding Man
I am a balding man. Not a bald man. Not yet. There is still enough hair left on my head that, as long as I'm not too sweaty or shorter than everyone in the room and the lighting is right, I can maintain the façade that I am one of the haired. The haired, those with a robust hairline that spans straight across their foreheads like a railroad or the horizon. The top-back part of their head still covered in luscious locks instead of a naked skin, a reverse forehead staring out like Sauron's unblinking eye. Sometimes, like some sort of hairline perv, I catch myself staring at someone with a particularly thick hairline and imagine how much better his life must be—the confidence, the opportunities.

Economists figured out just how much men will pay to end baldness
Let’s say a man who’s bald as bowling ball, à la Bruce Willis today, has the opportunity to re-grow those locks so as to resemble a more luscious-locked Willis from his Die Hard days, or an even floppier hairstyle, perhaps like that Willis sported in his Moonlighting era. How much would he pay for this opportunity?

Is there an evolutionary benefit to being bald?
Evolutionary traits tend to exist for two main reasons: survival and attracting a sexual partner. Perhaps like a peacock’s feathers, the hair on a man’s head creates a visual display to attract members of the opposite sex, although this may have came to an abrupt end in the 1980s, thanks to the mullet hairstyle. In any event, later in life, when survival supersedes producing offspring, the head sacrifices its hair and uses the energy saved elsewhere in the body. Perhaps men who are lucky enough to keep a full head of hair don’t have their priorities right.
Losing Your Hair? Why This Solution Is No Longer Shameful
Discussing treatments is suddenly fashionable. On Instagram, satisfied shoppers tag Hims, Keeps and Roman in photos showcasing their follicle revivals. While it’s refreshing (even jarring) to witness men discussing their hair loss in Roman ads or in Keeps’s social media posts and while there’s clearly less embarrassment around balding, the end goal is still to re-establish a full head of hair.

Do Short Haircuts Cause Balding?
There are many types of hair loss, such as autoimmune-related alopecia areata, where people lose hair in circles on the scalp and body, and telogen effluvium, a period of shedding commonly experienced after surgery or stress. One of the most common forms is androgenetic alopecia, also known as male- (or female-) pattern hair loss. It affects around 80% of men by the time they are 80 years old (and about 50% of women, though it’s less obvious), and is characterized by thinning at the top of the head and receding at the front.

How to use genetics to figure out if you'll go bald
There's a common notion that, for men, if you want to figure out whether you'll go bald, you can just look at your mother's father. If he was bald, the thinking goes, you'll be bald too. If he wasn't, you're safe. As it turns out, genetic research tells us that the full picture is somewhat more complicated — but this idea isn't entirely misleading.

Proof That God Loves Bald Men!
Best passage of the day: Leviticus interrupts these dire leprous warnings to reassure men that, yes, it’s OK to be bald. “If a man loses the hair of his head and becomes bald, he is pure.” And it gets better! God also approves of male-pattern baldness. “If he loses the hair on the front part of his head and becomes bald at the forehead, he is pure.” So throw out that Rogaine! God loves a cue-ball, baby!

Why Do Men Go Bald? Male Pattern Baldness
A study in 2011 found that the root cause of male pattern baldness is that as we age, stem cells in the scalp lose the ability to develop into the type of cells that make hair follicles.
