You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby Bottle
Plastic or glass? That is the question for many new parents choosing a baby bottle. Glass is easier to clean and can be heated without having to worry about chemicals leaching into the milk — the science behind that claim may be questionable, but there is no doubt that it is seen as a concern among consumers.
Plastic, on the other hand, won’t break and is lighter. A hybrid bottle developed by Chicco solves that dilemma by bonding a thin layer of unbreakable glass to an outer layer of plastic. The ChiccoDuo Hybrid has reaped numerous awards since it was launched in April 2021. This week it was named to Time magazine’s list of the 100 Best Inventions of 2021.

Another place you’d expect to find polypropylene is in baby feeding bottles. We generally assume that bottles made from this plastic are rigid and stable when they’re sterilised with hot water and shaken while preparing formula. But in new research, we’ve shown that baby formula preparation with polypropylene bottles exposes infants around the world to an average of one million microplastic particles per day.
BPS, a popular substitute for BPA in consumer products, may not be safer
However, BPS may not be safer than BPA. Two recent studies have found that BPS is as hormonally active as BPA and, like BPA, it interferes with the endocrine (hormone) system in ways that may produce harmful effects, such as obesity, cancer and neurological disorders. In a paper published last month, we showed that both of these endocrine-disrupting chemicals alter normal development of the reproductive system.
Why I Won't Buy BPA-Free Baby Products
While giving up plastics may seem daunting, in truth there are wonderful and reasonably priced alternatives for nearly every plastic kid product on the market (and I hope that after reading this some of the entrepreneurs out there will be inspired to make even more). Glass, metal and wood have been used for thousands of years and have the added benefits of quality and longevity.
