Patient

There are many different causes of pelvic pain. Some are more serious than others. If you are confident that you know the cause or the pain, for example, period pain, you could try taking a painkiller such as ibuprofen or paracetamol. If you are not sure of the cause of the pain or if the pain is severe, you should see a doctor. In particular, some causes are emergencies - for example, an ectopic pregnancy.

UpToDate

Chronic pelvic pain is defined as pain that occurs below the umbilicus (belly button) that lasts for at least six months. It may or may not be associated with menstrual periods. Chronic pelvic pain may be a symptom caused by one or more different conditions, but in many cases is a chronic condition due to abnormal function of the nervous system (often called “neuropathic pain”).
