Now That Weed is Mostly Legal, Hemp Should Be Booming. But It’s Not
Hemp was going to save the world, or so the Baja hoodie-wearing hippies hanging out at California’s Venice Beach back in the ‘80s would have it. The fast growing, fibrous stalks could be used for insulation, rope, construction, and fabric—even the soft striped pullovers popular with surfers at the time. The founding fathers grew it, they claimed, and the first two iterations of the United States’ Constitution were drafted on hemp paper. The oil-rich seeds were good in granola, high in protein, and perfect for beauty products from shampoos to facial creams. When soaked and pressed, the seeds make a tasty milk, far creamier than soy. The plant was touted as a climate warrior as well: able to…

Hemp: the green crop tied down by red tape in the US
Elliott estimates he could make a couple million dollars if he sold this leftover stuff as livestock feed. Hemp seedcake would make a great substitute for alfalfa – rich in fatty acids, proteins and fiber. His cattle rancher buddies are hit hard by the soaring costs of hay and would love to get their hands on this alternative. One buffalo herder wanted to buy the whole lot. But Elliot can’t sell to them. He can’t even give it away for free. That’s because when the 2018 Farm Bill took hemp off the list of controlled substances, hemp as commercial livestock feed was not approved.
Going Green with Hemp
Throughout several civilizations, hemp was used for food, textiles, oil, and industrial purposes. Yet, after getting confused with marijuana in the 1900s, hemp was soon outlawed and forgotten. Many of its benefits were lost in the modern world.
Hemp is now legal. That’s huge for the CBD industry.
With hemp’s legalization, CBD is bound to become even more visible. Its legal status remains unclear — the Drug Enforcement Administration classifies CBD as illegal, although it doesn’t go after anyone using or possessing it, and it hasn’t said if it will reclassify CBD now that hemp is legal. The Food and Drug Administration still considers it a drug, and therefore categorizes it as illegal to be put in foods and or health products without its approval. After the hemp legalization bill passed, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb issued a statement saying that the FDA’s opinions had not changed, and that CBD companies must obtain approval from the FDA.
How the Farm Bill Changed the Status of Hemp
While marijuana is illegal on the federal level, the 2018 Farm Bill carved out an exemption for cannabinoids derived from hemp plants.
Is industrial hemp the ultimate energy crop?
Sustainable bioenergy production is not easy, and a diversity of crops will be needed. Industrial hemp is not the ultimate energy crop. Still, if cultivated on good soil with decent fertilisation, hemp can certainly be an environmentally sound crop for bioenergy production and for other industrial uses as well.
The “Other” Hemp
Hemp is the most versatile crop on earth — with over 50,000 uses ranging from food to clothing, plastic to fuel, building materials to cars and more!
FDA signals it will keep up enforcement vs. CBD, delta-8 in absence of Farm Bill
With prospects slim for CBD to be regulated in the absence of an updated U.S. Farm Bill, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) appears it will continue past practice – attempting to keep up enforcement by issuing warnings to producers while waiting on Congress to set rules.
5 surprising ways hemp helps the planet
Long used to treat maladies from anxiety to inflammation, hemp is now being used to build cars, brew beer, and innovate other sustainable solutions.
A few things you may not know about hemp
Hemp is one of the healthiest and most potentially lucrative crops that can be grown on an industrial scale. Unfortunately, farmers in the United States are barred from growing hemp without a special permit.
As more states legalize cannabis, the market for seeds is in full bloom
The messy intersection of botany and the law contributes to the murky legal status of seeds used to grow THC-rich cannabis.
Can Hemp Really Save the World?
Can marijuana's non-psychoactive cousin really save the world, or is it’s universal utility just a pipe dream of cannabis dweebs and conspiracy theorists that’s coming into vogue because of marijuana accelerating legality?
Hemp can now be sold as a food in Australia (and it’s super good for you)
Hemp seed hearts are also rich in oils, with a ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 polyunsaturated fats of around 3:1. Now we can add hemp seeds and oil to the relatively limited list of good plant sources of these fats. Nutritionists increasingly highlight the importance of balancing the amounts of omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fats in our diets. Hemp oil can be cold-pressed out of the seeds. It is likely that the oil itself will also become more readily available as a product in Australia now the law has changed. However, this oil often contains chlorophyll, the group of pigments in plants that gives them their green colour. The oil is quite unstable and oxidises quite quickly. To slow this rancidity process down, the oil should be stored in a brown bottle away from direct sunlight.
Hemp Seeds Are an Unsung Health Hero
It seems like hemp seeds are in everything now: Tom Brady's smoothie, packaged granola, energy bars. But does that mean that you should you be incorporating them into your protein shakes, salad dressings, overnight oats, and more? Yes, yes you should.
Here’s Why Edible Hemp Will Never Get You High
But there’s something many people just can’t get over: hemp’s link to marijuana. As we sprinkle the seeds on top of our salads, we can’t help but wonder: what’s the deal with hemp seeds and THC?
How Hemp Can Benefit Your Health Without Getting You High
The first things most of us think of when it comes to hemp are hippies with their sandals and necklaces made from hemp cords – but there’s much more to this plant than that.
I Replaced My Entire Beauty Routine With Only CBD and Hemp Products
I had assumed that replacing all of my go-to products with their weed-based counterparts would feel like a huge undertaking, but with so many options available, the hardest thing was actually deciding which ones to use. I mean, how many CBD serums does a girl need?
Thomas Jefferson’s Favorite Plant Is Back in American Soil
Hemp is a variety of cannabis — and thus a cousin of marijuana — that contains 0.3% or less of the psychoactive component THC. (Marijuana plants typically contain 5% to 20% THC.) You can’t get high from hemp, but starting in 1937, U.S. drug laws made cultivating it off-limits.
Why Hemp Is Still Controversial In America And A Challenge For Entrepreneurs
Despite its eco-friendly nature, hemp is still not allowed for widespread cultivation in the US; rather only small-scale pilots are allowed in a few states around the country.
Now That Weed is Mostly Legal, Hemp Should Be Booming. But It’s Not
In many ways, hemp does deliver. The high protein seeds are used in animal feed, and the fibrous stalks are blended with lime to make hempcrete—a new building material that promises to replace carbon spewing concrete with a carbon sequestering, renewable alternative.
4 Ways Hemp Can Save the World
Over the years the hemp plant has been demonized, whether intentionally or not, due to its links with marijuana. However industrial hemp, which this article is about, is a different strain of hemp to the plant needed to manufacturer the drug. Industrial hemp has many qualities that can become powerful tools for saving our planet, as it is a versatile crop particularly because different parts of the plant have different uses.

Hemp for Victory
Produced by the US Government in 1942...Interesting to learn that Dupont Chemical funded the anti- hemp / marijuana effort. This is because they had patents on new synthetic fibers and Hemp had a new machine that would put them out of business if hemp were to be used for clothes.
