What's In Your Drink? The Straw That May Detect Date Rape Drugs
For three high schoolers, hearing about the risk of "date rape drugs" was the last straw...that led them to designing the first straw to detect common "date rape drugs." Victoria Roca, Susana Cappello and Carolina Baigorri, who attend Gulliver Preparatory School in Miami, designed a straw that includes two chemical test strips that turn navy blue if they come into contact with some substances frequently used for "drug-facilitated sexual assault." Date rape drug test allows women to discreetly check for spiked drinks with a few drops
The start-up that made headlines four years ago for developing a nail polish that would detect date rape drugs is finally releasing a test kit for sale starting Thursday. Undercover Colors scrapped the nail polish in favor of a gender-neutral small, disposable test to detect whether a drink has been doctored. The tests, which use just a few drops of liquid, look and operate much like a pregnancy test. They can detect Xanax or its generic alprazolam, Valium (diazepam) and flunitrazepam, also known as Rohypnol, said CEO Barbara Cook. They do not screen for other common date rape drugs, such as GHB or ketamine.

There’s coasters, cups, straws, nail polish and a smart device. Most of these date rape drugs detectors are not yet available.
A simple straw to help combat a widespread rape problem? ‘Brilliant’
This winning team faced plenty of naysayers — from their own class. But Susana Cappello, Carolina Baigorri and Victoria Roca of Gulliver Preparatory were powered by passion. They took the feedback into consideration, changed their product without changing their mission and persisted — all the way to first place in the Business Plan Challenge High School Track. Their winning concept is Smart Straws, which detect the most common rape drugs and turn blue when they are placed in nonalcoholic or alcoholic drinks.
Anti-rape devices may have their uses, but they don’t address the ultimate problem
Ultimately, there can be benefits to using technology to prevent sexual violence, but we must also encourage social shifts that tackle the heart of the problem.

Specifically, we support the availability of facilities to allow young people at venues or events where drug taking is acknowledged to be likely to seek advice about the substances they’re considering ingesting.
Testing festival goers’ pills isn’t the only way to reduce overdoses. Here’s what else works
We know that prohibition doesn’t work to reduce either harms or drug use. But what does? Most illicit drugs used at festivals, including ecstasy (methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA), started out as relatively benign pharmaceuticals.
