Interestingly enough, amongst the chaos when I was told I had epiglottitis, I at least felt validated for going in. Nobody that works in emergency medicine wants to go to the ED unless they absolutely have to.

Before the development of the Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccine, the majority of cases were caused by H.influenzae and the condition was far more common. In the post-vaccine era, the pathogens responsible are more varied and can also be polymicrobial. For this reason, the term "supraglottitis" is often preferred, as the infections may affect the supraglottic structures more generally.

Acute epiglottitis is a condition in which there is inflammation of the epiglottis. It may also affect the soft tissues surrounding the epiglottis, particularly in affected adults - hence the term supraglottitis. It is potentially life-threatening if complete obstruction of the airway occurs.
