The Fourth of July is a time to relax with family and friends, and sometimes a little gluttony is good for the soul, my words, not Jillian's

July 4th is coming up and you know what that means… parties. Well, maybe I should say booze, burgers, and barbecues instead because that’s really what it’s all about, right? It’s hard to imagine a holiday without massive quantities of food and drink. And, no matter where you spend your holiday - the beach, the park or lounging by the pool, there is no reason not to enjoy 4th of July treats.
Well, maybe one reason; the extra calories from the extra food that leads to weight gain. I know, what a killjoy… But who wants to kick off bathing suit season with a jiggly behind? Not me. But it’s OK, former Biggest Loser host and health guru, Jillian Michaels is sharing some of her favorite tips that will allow you to enjoy your summer while minimizing the damage that can occur during the holidays.
Chose a lean meat – Although beef burgers and hot dogs are traditional your best bet is to choose a leaner cut of meat such as a tuna steak, chicken breast, white meat turkey, or lean grass-fed ground beef. You’ll save on fat and calories but won’t sacrifice flavor.
Skip the bread – Go bunless. Wrap a piece of lettuce around your protein and you’ll cut out almost 200 hundred calories. However, if you just can’t avoid the bread choose a whole wheat bun instead of the traditional white and only eat half of it.
It’s all about the veggies- Incorporate as many vegetables into your meal as possible. It will help you feel full faster for minimal calories. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing better than a fresh summer vegetable salad, just be sure to avoid fatty dressings. Also, try putting an extra serving of veggies on your burger by doubling up on the tomatoes, onions, and lettuce. Or, be creative and try something new. How about grilled bell peppers or mushrooms on your burger, or a vegetable kabob?
Avoid the sabotaging sides – Potato salad, coleslaw, macaroni salad, baked beans. All diet time bombs! One serving of potato salad has more fat and calories than a hamburger patty! Instead, fill your plate with fruit and a green salad, or bring a low calorie version of your favorite side.
Snacking is ok – Just pick the right ones! Choose healthier snack options like low fat potato chips over fried potato chips or baked tortilla chips with salsa. Hummus and veggies are a perfect outdoor snack, they’re crunchy and vitamin packed and you don’t have to worry about spoilage.
Watch your alcohol consumption – It’s hard, I know, but try to limit yourself to one or two cocktails. White wine, light beer or a vodka soda with fresh lime juice are good choices. Just make sure you avoid all the sugary high calorie mixers, juices and sodas. Also, be sure you keep yourself hydrated by drinking lots of water.
Desserts – There is nothing like fresh fruit during the summer. Strawberries, peaches, or cherries, are perfect. Or, let the child in you come out and make fresh fruit juice popsicles. They are great on a hot afternoon.
Play - Start up a game of Frisbee, football, tag, or have a water balloon fight - anything that gets you moving. You’ll burn calories and have fun at the same time!
Wear a bikini – (Yes, she really said that) If you strut yourself around in a bikini you'll be less likely to go bananas at the buffet. It makes sense…I know I would definitely stay away from the buffet because I would never get up and walk around in front of anyone in a bikini.
So, even if you overdid it a bit, don’t worry too much. Over the next few days just try to up your fruit and vegetable intake, minimize fats and salt, and exercise for at least 30 minutes a day and you should be back to your pre-holiday weight in no time. One day of mild overindulgence isn’t going to destroy your long-term health goals.
