Concussions, Octopi and Sharks - Oh My!

Leslie Kollar | Health Musings | April 19, 2011

Research points toward the early onset of dementia, CTE and other major health risks with repeated hits to the head. Just ask any former professional football player!

Concussions are in the news again. Andrew Bucholtz on Yahoo! Sports Canada penned an indepth and interesting article centered around CFL star quarterback Matt Dunigan who is now retired. Dunigan is feeling the long term effects of multiple concussions suffered during his playing years and as such has persuaded his son, a very promising athlete, to give up the sport of football. Dunigan's son Dolan had already suffered several concussions from playing the game.

Both Dunigan's story and the Bucholtz article point out the concerning problem of concussions in sports. As a former pro player, Dunigan says he may have chosen a different path had he known the concussions have affected the rest of his life. The macho NFL will pooh pooh him as a wimpy CFL player but concussions are serious business. Read the article and decide for yourself.

Two other sports stories of interest caught my eye today - no they are are not exactly health related, but they are worth noting.

The first one is the traditional throwing of an octopus onto the ice during the NHL playoffs. An octopus! Really? Now I'm all for sports, traditions, symbolism etc, but an octopus? And of all people, the NHL VP of Communications Frank Brown says it's a tradition worth continuing. Maybe someone should throw Frank Brown out on the ice and slap him around a bit. I would have inserted a you tube video here but I don't want to lend any credibility to these morons!

The second one comes from Australia where there about 30 bull sharks in a water hazard on the Carbrook Golf Club in Queensland. Now THAT'S a hazard. On second thought, maybe someone should take Frank Brown golfing in Australia.

If I Get Breast Implants Too Big Will I Tip Over?

Probably not. But, bigger is better, at least that is the American way of life. We drive big cars, we live in big houses, we eat supersized meals and we drink big gulps sitting in front of a big screen TV
