Pharmacotherapy and behavioral support are each effective when used alone, but combining them is more effective. Combined pharmacotherapy and behavioral interventions increased quit rates from a mean of 8.6% with brief advice or usual care to 15.2% in a pooled analysis. • Pharmacotherapy helps reduce nicotine withdrawal symptoms (i.e., nicotine replacement therapy [NRT]) and/or minimizes the favorable effects experienced while smoking (i.e., varenicline), while behavioral interventions seek to change learned behaviors associated with smoking.

Smoking cessation
Nicotine and other substances in tobacco are extremely addictive. As such, tobacco addiction is a chronic relapsing disorder which requires aggressive and ongoing therapy. Patients frequently require several attempts before successfully quitting. Cravings can persist long after smoking cessation, making this a major driver of relapse. The most effective therapies are combination strategies involving counseling as well as pharmacological support.
Can quitting smoking for ‘Stoptober’ really help you kick the habit?
On the whole, however, I believe campaigns like Stoptober are a sound investment for both individual smokers and the population as a whole. Even if someone starts smoking again in November, they have gained a month free from the habit and learned from their experience, ready for the next attempt.
Can social media help you quit smoking?
Tobacco is still the biggest cause of preventable death in the world. Although the total number of smokers is falling, a high percentage of teenagers and young people in their 20s continue to smoke. Although many young people want to quit, few are successful. Most do not access face-to-face or telephone cessation services and so may be missing out on the support they need to quit successfully. It may be that quitting smoking presents a different set of issues for young people than for older adults.
CBD Could Help People Smoke Fewer Cigarettes
A small but growing body of research suggests that a compound in marijuana may help people find cigarettes less appealing.
Drugs, gums or patches won’t increase your chances of quitting
The US researchers followed two groups of people 2002/03 and 2010/11 and found at the end of the 12-month period, those using varenicline (sold in Australia as Champix), bupropion (Zyban), or nicotine-replacement therapy (gums, mints or patches) were no more likely to have quit smoking for 30 days or more than those who didn’t use these drugs.
Have You Quit Smoking? New Study Has Both Good And Bad News For You
"While the importance of smoking cessation cannot be overstated, former heavy smokers need to realize that the risk of lung cancer remains elevated for decades after they smoke their last cigarette, underscoring the importance of lung cancer screening," said senior author Matthew Freiberg, MD, professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt.
Medications to help people to stop smoking: an overview of reviews
NRT, bupropion and varenicline all improve the chances of quitting, with a low risk of harms. Combination use of NRT is as effective as varenicline, and more effective than single types of NRT.
Nicotine replacement therapy versus control for smoking cessation
All of the commercially available forms of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), i.e. gum, transdermal patch, nasal spray, inhalator, oral spray, lozenge and sublingual tablet, are effective as part of a strategy to promote smoking cessation. They increase the rate of long‐term quitting by approximately 50% to 60%, regardless of setting. These conclusions apply to smokers who are motivated to quit. There is little evidence about the role of NRT for individuals smoking fewer than 10 to 15 cigarettes a day.
Pharmacological Approach to Smoking Cessation: An Updated Review for Daily Clinical Practice
Currently, it is well accepted that smoking cessation drugs are effective and safe in real-world settings. Nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), varenicline, bupropion and cytisine are the main pharmacological strategies available for smoking cessation.

Varenicline and Nicotine Replacement Therapy for Smokers Admitted to Hospitals
In this randomized clinical trial of the combination of varenicline and NRT lozenges in hospitalized adult daily smokers, the combination treatment improved self-reported abstinence compared with varenicline alone, without compromising safety, but it did not improve biochemically validated abstinence.

Why e-cigarettes could be holding back your plans to quit smoking
However, just because some people use e-cigarettes as a complement to tobacco doesn’t mean they don’t want to quit. Our research actually found that complementary users were more likely to be using another quitting method or product, such as nicotine gum or patches, in addition to e-cigarettes. This suggests that for some trying to quit, their progress may be hindered by e-cigarettes.
