There’s an exceedingly simple way to get better health care: Choose a better hospital. A recent study shows that many patients have already done so, driving up the market shares of higher-quality hospitals.
A great deal of the decrease in deaths from heart attacks over the past two decades can be attributed to specific medical technologies like stents and drugs that break open arterial blood clots. But a study by health economists at Harvard, M.I.T., Columbia and the University of Chicago showed that heart attack survival gains from patients selecting better hospitals were significant, about half as large as those from breakthrough technologies.

Researchers rank best ‘hospital cities’ in the US and the world
Which large cities have the best hospitals in the United States? In the world? Fear not: researchers at MedBelle—a London- and Berlin-based digital hospital provider of application programs, software, and systems for medical procedures—have done the calculations for us, ranking the top cities for hospital infrastructure based on quality, accessibility, and ecosystem. They analyzed each hospital within each city designated as a "top hospital city."

For the seventh year, HealthGrades, a hospital rating company based in Golden, Colo., has gauged which facilities best protect their patients from complications and mortality. In a study that evaluates "quality and clinical excellence," the company has identified 270 hospitals out of 5,000 that collectively had a 28% lower mortality rate and 8% lower complication rate than the national average

The intent of the HCAHPS initiative is to provide a standardized survey instrument and data collection methodology for measuring patients' perspectives on hospital care. While many hospitals have collected information on patient satisfaction, prior to HCAHPS there was no national standard for collecting or publicly reporting patients' perspectives of care information that would enable valid comparisons to be made across all hospitals.
