A Non-Traditional Path Into Optometry School
For some optometry students, going to doctoral school is just the next step after getting a bachelor’s degree. I admire the young, motivated students that followed the multi-point plan to graduate with honors, study for an entrance exam, and start his or her doctoral journey immediately following undergrad. After optometry school, these young professionals will have plenty of time to explore the spectrum of optometry, honing in on his or her desired practice setting and working towards an ideal work-life balance. On the other side of the coin are the “non-traditional” students, like myself.

Prospects
Most optometrists work in high street practices which may be independent or part of a regional or national chain. A smaller number work in hospitals alongside other healthcare professionals such as doctors and orthoptists. Some optometrists work in academic settings doing research and/or teaching, and also in the optical manufacturing industry.
Science Buddies
Optometrists are the primary caretakers of our most important sense–vision. They diagnose and detect problems not only with vision, but with the health of the eye and the whole body. Based on their diagnoses, they prescribe glasses, contact lenses, and medications; refer patients to opthamologists for surgery; or develop treatment plans, like vision therapy, to help correct for deficits in depth perception.
