Urgent Care Medicine

What’s awesome is that the majority of my patients aren’t sick. They also aren’t there trying to look for a cure for their chronic back pain. Patients often have an acute issue that they need addressed, and if I am successful in addressing it, I am their hero - Mohammad Ashori MD

ED To Urgent Care – A Career Change

I don’t handle emergencies – despite what my urgent care colleagues believe, we are in the convenient care business, sometimes dealing with urgencies but never, ever emergencies. Let me explain this. My colleagues believe that some Urgent Care sites are harder than others due to “acuity”. They share stories about some night when they had chest pains, abdominal pains, shortness of breath and weakness in elderly as their cases. Bless their hearts, and I am not trying to be mean, but I disagree with their assessment. Some are even distraught because they have seen septic patients, patients with STEMI’s, PE’s and lethargic infants. The point I am trying to make is that when patients come into the…

The Benefits of Working in Urgent Care

If you’re deciding between working in an emergency room versus in urgent care, factor in the emotional toll. The ER can provide a big adrenaline rush, but such high-stress work often leads to burnout over time. Urgent care clinics have a slower pace that can be a better match for some personalities.

The Urgency Room vs. Your Primary Care Doctor: What to Consider

While urgent care clinics and The Urgency Room are excellent resources for patients who have issues they can’t wait to have their primary care physician treat, they aren’t a replacement for primary care. Urgent care centers can treat all the same issues and illnesses as a primary care physician, but it’s important to have a primary care physician who can help manage your ongoing, long-term health needs.

Thinking Outside the Box to Bring Urgent Care to the Patient

Urgent care is a consumer-driven phenomenon, and physician entrepreneurs continue to evolve the delivery of urgent care services in response to changing consumer preferences, both inside and beyond the brick-and-mortar facility.

Transitioning from Emergency Medicine to an Urgent Care Environment

Urgent care medicine is a fast-expanding specialty that is attracting the attention of seasoned physicians who are potentially seeking to make career transitions. Emergency medicine physicians are a prime example. For many of them, switching to urgent care has many advantages.

Urgent care medicine and the role of the APP within this specialty

The field of urgent care medicine offers an additional medical pathway for patients who have immediate, but non-life-threatening, medical concerns. Urgent care medicine offers a more varied set of resources and services than a physician office setting, with more flexible hours. This gives patients an opportunity to not have to go to the emergency department for non-emergent care. As a newer specialty within the medical field, certain roles of healthcare providers other than physicians are becoming established, including the advanced practice provider (APP).

Why Are Urgent Care Centers Becoming So Popular Lately?

Healthcare is a hot topic in the modern world. With so many people confused about their current health care options, it’s no surprise that more models are emerging to address the ever-fluctuating health needs of the public. One such model that is gaining substantial traction in today’s world is that of the urgent care center.

Why do physicians trash urgent care?

When urgent care is mentioned on this subreddit, it is typically negative. I'm wondering why, and similarly, is there something wrong with a physician working at urgent care (as opposed to an urgent care stacked with midlevels... although that's becoming the status quo in many facilities throughout the usa/isn't exclusive to urgent care)? I'm still a medical student so I don't have any experience rotating at an urgent care but it's not clear to me why the care I'd give there in the future would be any different than the care I'd give working at a primary care office (e.g. try to treat acute illness, and if you can't or it's out of your scope, send them to ER or a specialist).
