Inside Terrorism
What is terrorism? Few words have so insidiously worked their way into our everyday vocabulary. Like `Internet' -- another grossly over-used term that has similarly become an indispensable part of the argot of the late twentieth century -- most people have a vague idea or impression of what terrorism is, but lack a more precise, concrete and truly explanatory definition of the word. This imprecision has been abetted partly by the modern media, whose efforts to communicate an often complex and convoluted message in the briefest amount of airtime or print space possible have led to the promiscuous labelling of a range of violent acts as `terrorism'. What the New Orleans attack tells us about terrorism in 2025
It was a somber start to 2025. In the early hours of New Year’s Day, a man drove a pickup truck through throngs of pedestrians on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, leaving fourteen dead and injuring at least thirty others. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said Thursday that the driver, Shamsud-Din Jabbar, acted alone and was inspired by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). What does the attack reveal about ISIS and the state of global terrorism as 2025 begins?

Terrorism Is Not as Simple as They Say
Terrorism has been a hot topic for throughout the 21st century. But most of that talk is hot air thick enough to obscure more than it clarifies. Perhaps no act in today's world is subject to more oversimplification than terrorism. Terroristic acts are designed to elicit a strong emotional response, and as such, people tend to eschew careful consideration in favor of reflexive reaction—which, ironically, often does more to perpetuate conditions that foment further terrorism.
A chilling visual history of the past 15 years of terrorism
The video's creator, Milan R. Vuckovic, used data from the University of Maryland's authoritative Global Terrorism Database to plot every terrorist attack that killed 21 or more people between the beginning of 2001 and this year (the 2015 data is gleaned from news reports and is less reliable).
A Potential Benefit to Memories of Terrorism
Amidst the horror there is altruism, which leaves a deep impression.
A “Distraught Person” Can Still Be a Terrorist
This isn’t to discount the role of radical ideologies in driving violence, and it certainly shouldn’t be used to stigmatize people dealing with trauma or mental health issues. But it’s important to understand that ideology can sometimes be just one of a number of factors motivating an act of terrorism. If someone is distraught it doesn’t mean they’re not also a terrorist.
Anatomy of terror: What makes normal people become extremists?
It takes more than religious fanaticism or hatred to make someone take innocent lives, but recognise the true roots of ISIS-inspired terror and they can be addressed.
Expert opinion: Why aren’t mass shootings considered acts of terrorism?
“I think individuals at times tend to have a preconception that terrorism tends to be something that’s carried out by ISIS or al-Qaeda, or a group of organizations such as that, and if it’s an individual outside of those organizations, it may not be considered terrorism. But when you look at the actions, they clearly fit the criteria for terrorism. Secondly, I think it’s the form of the attack type that does matter a lot, regarding people’s perceptions.”
In COVID’s shadow, global terrorism goes quiet. But we have seen this before, and should be wary
Have we flattened the curve of global terrorism? In our COVID-19-obsessed news cycle stories about terrorism and terrorist attacks have largely disappeared. We now, though, understand a little more about how pandemics work. And ironically, long before the current pandemic, the language of epidemiology proved helpful in understanding by analogy the way in which terrorism works as a phenomenon that depends on social contact and exchange, and expands rapidly in an opportunistic fashion when defences are lowered.
Israel’s 9/11? How Hamas Terrorist Attacks Will Change the Middle East
The surprise terrorist attacks that shattered Israel on Oct. 7 are without precedent. And, this war, which will surely escalate and likely have wide-ranging and longstanding repercussions, will be a watershed moment in national, regional, and international security on par with the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. Much will depend on Israel’s next steps, with options likely ranging from a ground invasion of the Gaza Strip to perhaps a more ambitious and consequential strike directly against Iran. Either eventuality will reshape the Middle East for the foreseeable future — not least by likely derailing the Abraham Accords peace talks, as Hamas and Iran clearly intended.

We must mourn all victims. But until we look honestly at the violence we export, nothing will ever change
Terrorist Targets: The Ten Countries Which Suffer Most From Terrorism
Conflict remains the primary driver of terrorism, according to the researchers, with over 95% of deaths from terrorism occurring in countries involved in a civil war or cross-border conflict or battling domestic militants – something that is true of all ten countries at the sharp end of the index.

Immigration and terrorism are indeed linked, but the issue is far more complex than some commentators suggest.
What people actually mean when they label an attack “terrorism”
But the debate over which acts should and shouldn't be labeled "terrorism" is nothing new. Historian J. Bowyer Bell once said: "Tell me what you think about terrorism, and I will tell you who you are."
Why There Should Never Be Another Columbus Day
By all historical accounts, Christopher Columbus was a father of genocide. So why does the United States still have a national holiday to honor him?
Inside Terrorism
Terrorism, in the most widely accepted contemporary usage of the term, is fundamentally and inherently political. It is also ineluctably about power: the pursuit of power, the acquisition of power, and the use of power to achieve political change. Terrorism is thus violence -- or, equally important, the threat of violence -- used and directed in pursuit of, or in service of, a political aim. With this vital point clearly illuminated, one can appreciate the significance of the additional definition of `terrorist' provided by the OED: `Any one who attempts to further his views by a system of coercive intimidation'. This definition underscores clearly the other fundamental characteristic of terrorism: that it is a planned, calculated, and indeed systematic act.
33 maps that explain terrorism
Terrorism is a simple idea — intentionally targeting non-combatants to instill terror in a way that will accomplish political goals — that has had a profound impact on the world. But while we may think of terrorism today as something associated with wild-eyed religious radicals, in fact its history is much more complicated than that, and even the rise of what we now call jihadism is more complicated than you may think.
5 Takeaways From the Paris Attacks and the Long War Against Terrorism
The fight against ISIS and global jihad is the long war. It may well be the greatest foreign policy challenge of this generation. Whether the spate of recent jihadi attacks, including those in Paris, prove to be a transformational moment or just another horrific twist in this long war remains to be seen.

That effort goes under the general rubric of jihad.
