Lebanon’s Hunger Crisis Deepens
Lebanon is facing an unparalleled crisis, with economic collapse, political instability, and ongoing conflict combining to create a humanitarian emergency. Among the most pressing concerns is food security, as millions struggle to access basic necessities. The Lebanese lira has already lost 98% of its 2019 value and inflation has soared to nearly 269%. The cost of living has become unbearable for many, with the poverty rate jumping from 12% in 2012 to 44%. For years, we have been living in reverse.

The humanitarian crisis in Lebanon
The escalating violence and impending war have plunged children into a deepening humanitarian crisis. Thousands of families have fled their homes in southern and eastern Lebanon in search of safer areas, leaving behind their livelihoods and their children’s futures. Without access to education, healthcare, and basic necessities, the physical and emotional burden on Lebanon’s children is catastrophic.
The world welcomes the Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire, but worries remain
The conflict has driven more than 1.2 million Lebanese — about a fifth of the population — from their homes, according to the United Nations. Israel estimates about 60,000 people evacuated northern communities to flee Hezbollah's rockets.
A Generation at Risk: The Impacts of Lebanon's Escalating Humanitarian Crisis on Children
Lebanon is in the midst of a rapidly escalating, unprecedented humanitarian crisis that is plunging the country deep into poverty and threatens population well-being, economic development, social welfare and national and regional stability. The dire situation is due to the compounding effects of the August 2020 Beirut blast, massive economic collapse and the COVID-19 pandemic, in a setting of longstanding entrenched political corruption and a dysfunctional, mismanaged crisis response by the state.
Bouncing between war-torn countries: Displacement in Lebanon and Syria highlights cyclical nature of cross-border refuge
The escalation of hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah since September 2024, and Israel’s bombing of civilian areas across Lebanon, have unleashed a profound humanitarian disaster. The mass displacement of over 1 million people, including Lebanese citizens, migrant workers and Syrian and Palestinian refugees, has created a crisis within Lebanon. Yet an equally significant phenomenon is occurring away from Lebanon’s southern border with Israel: the movement of people who have been displaced within Lebanon into Syria.
Crisis in Lebanon: What You Need to Know
The scale and urgency of health and humanitarian needs are expected to rise as civilians continue to endure the traumas of violence, forced displacement, disrupted access to health care, food insecurity, and inconsistent access to clean water and sanitation. Notably, Lebanon’s health system was already on the verge of collapse before the recent escalation of violence while suffering from severe shortages in staff, medicines, and essential equipment.
Europe is not prepared for the looming Lebanese refugee crisis
In the broader context of an extremely volatile Middle East, this will heap pressure onto Europe. As the region’s instability deepens, European states can expect an additional number of migrants, and their claims for asylum, to reach them via countries like Greece or Italy, both located on the front lines of migration routes.
From Conflict to Crisis: Understanding Lebanon's Humanitarian Needs
Lebanon has been profoundly affected by the escalating conflict between Hezbollah and Israel, particularly since September 2024. With over 1.2 million people displaced from the South, the Beqaa Valley, and Beirut’s southern suburbs, the country is grappling with an overwhelming humanitarian crisis. Public schools and makeshift shelters are now sheltering the displaced, while hospitals struggle under the surge of casualties.

An economic collapse and failed politics have left people to fend for themselves. More than a dozen have held up banks to withdraw their own savings. ‘Crisis after crisis, where will it end?’
Israel has invaded Lebanon. Here’s what could come next.
The animosity between Hezbollah and Israel is decades old; in fact, Hezbollah formed in 1982 in southern Lebanon as a response to Israel’s disastrous invasion, which killed tens of thousands of Lebanese, and subsequent decades-long occupation of that area. Hezbollah waged guerilla warfare against Israeli troops for decades, and Israel finally left in 2000 following years of brutal fighting and a UN resolution requiring it to do so.
Lebanese ramp up efforts to ease humanitarian crisis
Amid Israeli strikes and limited public aid, Lebanese activists are springing into action. However, observers point out that aid is being politicized, and that too many people are in need.

Lebanon’s Deepening Crisis: The Case for a Sustainable Aid Response
A severe economic and financial crisis is causing tremendous hardship for the people of Lebanon, a quarter of whom are refugees, forcing an unprecedented number of people to rely on humanitarian assistance. The World Bank (WB) has described the crisis as one of the most severe globally since the mid-nineteenth century. With the collapse of virtually all sectors of the economy, large segments of the population have lost their means of subsistence and access to essential services including food.

Since September 23, 2024, an escalating conflict in Lebanon has led to widespread displacement and suffering for civilians. “Lebanon has been through so much already in recent years,” says Concern’s Sherzada Khan. The country has continued to deal with the long-term impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic and the 2020 Beirut port explosion. It is also facing what the World Bank considers to be one of the worst economic crises since the 19th Century.
