Lebanon’s Hunger Crisis Deepens

Lebanon is facing an unparalleled crisis, with economic collapse, political instability, and ongoing conflict combining to create a humanitarian emergency. Among the most pressing concerns is food security, as millions struggle to access basic necessities. The Lebanese lira has already lost 98% of its 2019 value and inflation has soared to nearly 269%. The cost of living has become unbearable for many, with the poverty rate jumping from 12% in 2012 to 44%. For years, we have been living in reverse.

 Lebanon’s Hunger Crisis Deepens

The situation is further exacerbated by the intensifying war with Israel, leading to increased displacement and destruction in southern Lebanon. Over 100,000 people have been displaced, primarily from southern districts such as Bint Jbeil and Sour (Tyre). The war has severely impacted livelihoods, particularly in the agricultural sector with 72% of farmers in the South reporting a loss of income, which is vital to southern Lebanon’s economy. The use of white phosphorus bombs and other forms of bombardment has destroyed vast areas of farmland, leading to significant losses in both crops and livestock.
