Bringing Awareness to "World Clubfoot Day"
Clubfoot is a treatable birth defect...
The majority of clubfeet can be corrected with the Ponseti Method in infancy during the first 6-8 weeks. The foot is manipulated to the correct position by means of a plaster casting series (with an Achilles tendon procedure before the last cast), then a splint is worn full-time for 2-3 months and lastly, a temporary bracing series for 3-4 years at night to prevent relapse (cases may vary).

How Parents And The Internet Transformed Clubfoot Treatment
When Jennifer Trevillian's daughter was born with clubfoot in 2000, the doctors said surgery was inevitable. "He started talking about her pending surgery before he physically examined her foot," Trevillian remembers. Trevillian started researching the condition on her new dial-up connection. There wasn't much. But she did find a few other parents talking about another option on iVillage, and a new Yahoo support group called NoSurgery4ClubFoot.
A Conversation with Clubfoot Moms
This episode is extra special because it features two of my very favorite clubfoot moms, Gina and Megan. We all met before our cutie's were born, and have continued down the clubfoot treatment journey since then.
Clubfoot Resources for Parents
Parents revolutionized access to clubfoot treatment. They brought Dr. Ponseti’s treatment to the world by sharing research and helping other families navigate medical options through online forums.
Clubfoot: Two Mama's Journeys
Clubfoot or Congenital Talipes Equino Varus (CTEV) is a common addition that affects one or both feet of a newborn bub. We've decided to share the stories of Jess and Annalise, whose bub's both experience clubfoot to help you give a better understanding of the condition and what the treatment involves.
Finding Inspiration in a Doctor’s Legacy
As Dr. Ponseti put it, surgeons love “their little knives.” The parents of children cured using his technique helped change things about a decade ago by taking to the Internet to spread the word. And it even gets better: the Ponseti method, as it is known, can be taught to nondoctors, making it a treatment that can be readily transferred anywhere in the world.
From One Clubfoot Mommy to Another - My Beautiful Mess
There are so many things that you don’t think about until you’re faced with it. What kind of clothes will go over a cast? How will I bathe him? I was surprised to learn that he could wear most regular clothes with the cast
Gene for Clubfoot Uncovered
Although the researchers could not find this specific mutation in 100 unrelated clubfoot patients, Jeff Murray, a pediatrician who studies the molecular basis of birth defects at the University of Iowa in Iowa City, says he is still excited by the discovery.
How Long Does Clubfoot Treatment Take?
The time frame to correct these types of child foot problems depends on when treatment begins, the severity of the clubfoot, and the kind of treatment. The gold standard is the Ponseti method, which we recommend for most infants.
Ignacio Ponseti, Hero to Many With Clubfoot, Dies at 95
Dr. Ponseti came up with his method after realizing that surgery for clubfoot actually did harm. Drawing on his experience tending to the wounded in the Spanish Civil War, he found that a regimen of plaster casts, braces and manipulations by hand could avoid the costs and aftereffects of surgery.
In a Remote Village, Witnessing Miracles
In this village, clubfoot used to be a life sentence: The grandma, Yahin-yee Korwee, never went to school, nor did her daughter, Hannah Cooper, 26. The grandfather abandoned the family when Hannah was born, ashamed that neighbors mocked her as a cripple.
In Honor of World Clubfoot Day – My Journey as a Clubfoot Mama
Today is World Clubfoot Day. For most, it’s just another day, because let’s face it, there is a ‘day’ for everything and who can keep track of all of them? But for me, it is a day of significance. A day that I reflect on my journey as a mom of a son born with bilateral clubfeet, and a day that I can now look back on my journey and reflect on the good, bad, and ugly, and ultimately be thankful for the journey that I never expected to have.

Scientists Find King Tut Had Club Foot, Malaria
A scientist at the Italian academy has found that bone abnormalities and malaria -- not murder or disease -- may have combined to suppress King Tut's immune system and cause the young Pharaoh's death.
Shakespeare Was Wrong: Richard III Wasn't a Club-Footed Hunchback
The bones have confirmed a few things about Richard III—eight battlewounds around his head confirm that he died in battle, and he did in fact have scoliosis—just not to the extent that he would've been a hunchback.
The Ponseti Method for Clubfoot Correction: An Overview for Parents
Ignacio V. Ponseti can be credited with developing a comprehensive technique for treating congenital clubfoot in the 1940s. One of the major principles of this technique is the concept that the tissues of a newborn's foot, including tendons, ligaments, joint capsules, and certain bones, will yield to gentle manipulation and casting of the feet at weekly intervals. By applying this technique to clubfeet within the first few weeks of life, most clubfeet can be successfully corrected without the need for major reconstructive surgery.
Bringing Awareness to "World Clubfoot Day"
Every year on June 3rd we celebrate “World Clubfoot Day.” The Ponseti International Association selected this date to commemorate the birthdate of Dr. Ignacio Ponseti. Dr. Ponseti developed the Ponseti method to treat clubfoot. With this treatment method, a clubfoot baby will be able to enjoy their childhood…may it be full of run and play, stand and walk, skipping, jumping, twirling and more!
Ponseti International
The Ponseti International Association is the global leader in training and educating healthcare providers on the treatment for congenital clubfoot. The Ponseti Method was developed at the University of Iowa by Dr. Ignacio Ponseti, M.D. This method for clubfoot treatment is nearly 100% effective when used properly by a trained health care provider and is considered the "gold standard" treatment for clubfoot.
Ponseti Method
"Parents of infants born with clubfeet may be reassured that their baby, if otherwise normal, when treated by expert hands will have normal looking feet with normal function for all practical purposes. The well treated clubfoot is no handicap and is fully compatible with normal, active life." Ignacio Ponseti, M.D.
