Consider the kiwi fruit

Excuse me for not getting too excited. I've never felt a joy within, a sense sublime at what is basically a hairy, swollen ball, tough-skinned and acid-fleshed. Kiwis are among the more curious fruits: while there's a pithy citrus family, while the peach is the fuzzy cousin of the nectarine, while apples and pears offer comparable joys, while the merry cherry seems to me different only in degree from, say, a plum or grape, there's nothing remotely like the kiwi. In Taiwan and Hong Kong they call it "qíyì guǒ" meaning strange or unusual fruit, a clever half-transliteration of the old Maori word.

 Cool as a Kiwi

This refreshing fuzzy fruit does wonders for your health and your palate. Why Eat Kiwis? The most obvious reason: flavor. Kiwis are at once tart and sweet, juicy and refreshing. Beyond taste, kiwis are little nutrient powerhouses. The two headliners are vitamin C—one medium kiwi delivers 117 percent of your daily needs—and vitamin K (38 percent in a medium kiwi), which helps with bone building and blood clotting, among other things. Kiwis also contain 9 percent of your daily fiber requirement, as well as lutein and zeaxanthin (for eye health), potassium and copper. Kiwis consistently appear on the Environmental Working Group’s Clean 15 list of the produce harboring the fewest pesticides.

The kiwifruit’s status as a transplant might not come as a surprise for many readers. After all, the story of one of the world’s greatest marketing and botanical hijacks has been vaguely circulating for decades, from a New York Times item about trade in New Zealand over 30 years ago to a TIME column about branding and psychology in 2010.

Kiwi and orange - two fruits with a special something

These two vitamin bombs should not be missing from the winter fruit plate: the kiwi and the orange. A fact sheet with interesting facts about their origin and why they are so healthy. Kiwis belong to the ray genus family and are berry fruits. The fruits, which can weigh up to 100 grams, are true vitamin C bombs. With just two kiwis a day, an adult can almost cover his or her daily vitamin C requirement. As with all fruits, the highest concentration of vitamins and minerals is found directly under the skin. Even if the hairy, rough structure of the kiwi peel may take some getting used to, it makes sense to eat the kiwi with the peel. As an ingredient in smoothies, it definitely works wonderfully. Also an extra portion of dietary fiber can be absorbed. Kiwis from organic cultivation should be preferred in any case. Kiwi contains the protein-splitting enzyme actinidain, which can be beneficial for digestion. However, it can cause allergic reactions. Actinidain is also the reason why kiwifruit should not be eaten with dairy products. This is because the enzyme breaks down milk protein into smaller components, resulting in a bitter taste.

Kiwi the super fruit: Good nutrition comes in small packages

While small in size, kiwifruits are an excellent source of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. They are also low in calories. Very few people know that there are multiple varieties of kiwifruit in addition to the most commonly known green golden kiwifruits.
