Which Type of Salt is Healthiest?

While so far no studies have been conducted to compare the health benefits of different types of salt, it’s unlikely that such a study would find major benefits of any particular salt. Because most salts average around 98% sodium chloride, any health benefits or drawbacks would come from the trace minerals or additives that make up the other 2%. While in larger amounts each of these trace minerals can help the body function efficiently, the amount in salt is likely too small to be consequential. Because there is no scientific evidence to suggest that any type of salt is better or healthier than any other, the best choice for you depends on your goals, tastes, and personal preferences.

How to Choose the Healthiest Type of Salt for Cooking

No matter which salt you choose, the small amount used contributes little nutritional value to your overall diet, making your selection a matter of personal taste. If you’re concerned about increasing the mineral content in your diet, focus on consuming more grains, vegetables, fruits, dairy, nuts and lean protein — salt shouldn’t be used as a supplement or alternative for the nutrition these foods contain. Salt — it's the ultimate condiment. It's the only rock we eat, and it makes our food taste better.  What is the Healthiest Salt?

Research comparing the types of salt is limited and has not identified one salt as the healthiest. Though the different types of salt vary in taste, coarseness, and mineral content, they all contain the same amount of sodium by weight.11 This means that your sodium intake will not decrease by switching to a different kind of salt. Further, the mineral content of salts like sea salt and Himalayan salt has not been proven to provide health benefits.

We know what you’re thinking now: even though sea salt is not worse for your health, the benefits of pink Himalayan salt outweigh that of sea salt. However, while pink Himalayan salt is composed of a greater number of helpful elements than sea salt, “the trace minerals that give unique taste or coloration are present in too minute a quantity to have any proven health impact,” says Dr. Li.
