Bone Marrow
If you're going to be alive and on this planet, you have to, like, suck the marrow out of every day and get the most out of it - Drew Barrymore

What Is The Bone Marrow, And What Does It Actually Do?
Bone marrow is an encapsulated bundle of stem cells that lies in the centre of certain bones. There are two things that are important to know about bone marrow. The first is that it is located in holes within the bones called marrow cavities. The second is that there are two types of bone marrow. Red bone marrow is found primarily within flat bones like the sternum and is the main focus of this article. Yellow bone marrow is located in the centre of long bones like the femur, often surrounded by a layer of red marrow.
Red bone marrow makes blood cells and stores blood platelets, while yellow bone marrow stores fat and produces cartilage, fat and bone. The average adult has around…

Bone Marrow
Bone marrow is found in the medullary cavities – the centres of bones. The bone marrow is where circulating blood cells are produced – a process known as haematopoiesis. Early on in a human’s life, this takes place in many bones, but during development haematopoiesis increasingly centres on flat bones so that by puberty, blood production takes place predominantly in the sternum, vertebrae, iliac bones and ribs.
Anatomy of surprise: Scientists discover hidden blood networks that cross through bone
For years, physiologists looking closely at bones noticed something puzzling. It was a microscopic prison break, blood cells slipping unseen from the enclosed depths of the bone marrow into the general circulation. “We have the bone marrow, which produces the blood cells, and when you need them, you need them urgently. But how do they get out?” said Svetlana Komarova, who studies bone biology at McGill University in Montreal.

Red Bone Marrow Vs. Yellow Bone Marrow
Bone marrow is a nutrient-dense, spongy tissue located in the cavities of bones. Bone marrow is where blood cells are produced and where stem cells are found. There are two types of bone marrow: red and yellow bone marrow. There are some key differences between red bone marrow vs yellow bone marrow, as the two have very different functions.
Red or White? Healthy Humans Need Both
When it comes to wine, we can choose red or white depending on our tastes. With blood cells, however, we need both red and white in order to stay healthy and function well. On Earth, fat accumulation in bone marrow and changes in blood cell function are associated with normal aging, conditions such as paralysis and osteoporosis, and prolonged periods of bed rest or limited mobility. So future space explorers and those of us on the ground will benefit from learning more about how to keep both red and white blood cells functioning well.
Scientists turn bones transparent to let them see into marrow
Now you see it, now you don’t: Scientists have used a chemical technique to make mouse bones turn transparent. The technique has been used in the past to make brains and kidneys see-through, but this marks the first time it’s been used in hard tissues.

Strengthening Your Bone Marrow with the Right Food
The bone marrow, which is primarily found inside the long bones of your limbs, is a dark brown, semi-solid tissue that is responsible for producing stem cells and platelets. Bone marrow consists of fat cells, blood cells, immune cells and other compounds responsible for clot formation. The health of your bone marrow depends predominantly upon the food you eat, and this is the reason why people suffering from bone marrow related diseases are often recommended to make healthy dietary changes.
The origins of bone marrow as the seedbed of our blood: from antiquity to the time of Osler
The marrow is currently well defined as the seedbed of our blood, producing 200 billion red cells, 10 billion white cells, and 400 billion platelets on a daily basis. Yet, the role of the marrow was unknown in antiquity and only first experimentally defined during the latter 19th century.

The bony skeleton that supports the human body and facilitates locomotion has an intricate microarchitecture of its own. The cavities created by the trabecular arrangement of the core of the bones are occupied by a mixture of blood cells across a large spectrum of development, and adipocytes. This tissue is known as bone marrow and is responsible for the production of blood cells – a process known as hematopoiesis.
