The Connective Tissue: The Body’s Binding Agent

The connective tissue provides protection and support to all the structures of the body. Moreover, it creates compartments within the body (abdominal cavity, chest cavity, and cranium, for example), thus creating order within the body as the closet does for our clothes and the kitchen cupboard for the dishes, pots, and pans.

However, due to the continuity of the connective tissue — i.e., there are no separations (or breaks) between the various types of connective tissue, trauma to the body may create distortion within the connective tissue not only at the point of impact, but also in neighboring or even distant structures.

Meet Your Interstitium, a Newfound "Organ"

The researchers said these fluid-filled spaces had been missed for decades because they don’t show up on the standard microscopic slidesthat researchers use to peer into the cellular world. When scientists prepare tissue samples for these slides, they treat the samples with chemicals, cut them into thin slices and dye them to highlight key features. But this fixing process drains away fluid and causes the newfound fluid-filled spaces to collapse.

Characteristics of Connective Tissue

Connective tissue is incredibly diverse and contributes to energy storage, the protection of organs, and the body's structural integrity.

Learn About the Body's Connective Tissue

As the name implies, connective tissue serves a connecting function: It supports and binds other tissues in the body. Unlike epithelial tissue, which has cells that are closely packed together, connective tissue typically has cells scattered throughout an extracellular matrix of fibrous proteins and glycoproteins attached to a basement membrane. The primary elements of connective tissue include a ground substance, fibers, and cells.

As the authors suggest in the paper, these fluid-filled spaces may serve as “shock absorbers” for organs, which might mean that direct sampling of the interstitial fluid could be a powerful diagnostic tool.

Seven things you might not know about blood

Blood is a connective tissue in the body. It has a multi-cellular component (made of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) and a liquid extracellular matrix. Unlike the other connective tissues in the body, blood is a liquid. The extracellular matrix, plasma, is liquid and suspends the cells in blood. But when tissues are damaged, by a cut for example, blood becomes a solid like other connective tissues.

What Is Connective Tissue?

There are many types of connective tissue. In fact, connective tissue is the most abundant type of tissue in the body and the most varied. When different types of protein fibers (collagen and elastin, for example, are both types of proteins), ground substance, and cells, are combined, we get different types of connective tissue.

Why Does My Body Feel Tight When I Wake Up?

Most of the time, that tight feeling when you wake up is a result of overnight changes to the lubrication in two different features of the body: the joints and the fascia.

Connective tissue is the tissue that connects or separates, and supports all the other types of tissues in the body. Like all tissue types, it consists of cells surrounded by a compartment of fluid called the extracellular matrix (ECM). However connective tissue differs from other types in that its cells are loosely, rather than tightly, packed within the ECM.

Physiopedia

Connective tissue is an umbrella term that encompasses a variety of tissue types, that connect, support and help bind other tissues in the body. Connective tissue divides into three categories: loose connective tissue, dense connective tissue, and specialized connective tissue.

StatPearls

Connective tissue is one of the basic tissue types of the body. As its name implies, "connective tissue" is a term given to several body tissues that connect, support, and help bind other tissues. While the various connective tissues of the body are diverse, they share numerous structural and functional features that explain why they are subsumed into a single tissue category. Connective tissue can be broken down into two primary categories: connective tissue proper and specialized connective tissue.
