Now ladies, this may well put off your cornflakes but I think it needs talking about. If you have ever experienced the misery of Bartholin cysts which then become Bartholin abscessss, you will know exactly what I am talking about... The Bartholin glands are two pea-sized glands located slightly posterior and to the left and right of the opening of the vagina. Sometimes however these glands can become blocked which results in the formation of a Bartholin cyst. These cysts can grow in size so that it is actually painful tio sit or walk. The mainstay of management is incision and drainage with insertion of a ward catheter. The ward catheter allows the cyst to continue to drain and allow re-epithelization of the Bartholin gland allowing the duct to stay patent in future.

A Bartholin gland cyst is a benign blockage of the Bartholin gland that is usually unilateral, asymptomatic, and maybe incidentally found during a pelvic exam or imaging studies. Bartholin gland obstruction may occur after trauma to the area, episiotomy, or childbirth; however, it may also occur without an identifiable cause.
