How Lexapro Changed My Life : Part 1
Over the years, I had many friends suggest trying medication. I always refused. Although it’s getting better, there’s still so much shame associated with anxiety. There’s always been such a stigma against taking medication for anxiety. Why? We are okay taking medication for other illnesses – diabetes, thyroid, blood pressure, etc. But anxiety? OMG fix that crap yourself! What is the deal?!

Life on Lexapro: 15 Weeks
The weirdest part of this is that I still feel anxious at times, but I feel like my brain and body are able to manage it much better. I am still able to recognize what makes me anxious, but it’s almost as if my brain just doesn’t care as much. I’ve learned what works for me and what doesn’t, I know that sometimes I feel better when I’m alone, and sometimes I feel better when I’m busy with other people. Lexapro hasn’t cured my anxiety, but it has given me the little 10 milligram daily dose that my brain needs to function properly.

Everything You Need to Know About Lexapro: Uses, Side Effects, More
Citalopram was the original chemical compound used in Celexa, another popular antidepressant. When it was time for the patent on Celexa to expire, some laboratories combined citalopram with enantiomers and created Lexapro to extend their product’s life. This is a common tactic in the pharmaceutical industry and has been quite successful. While the patent on Lexapro has now expired, laboratories still manufacture and market the drug in brand-name and generic forms.

My Journey Starting Lexapro
Bottom line after 14 days (I know it may take four weeks for the medicine to settle in): it is not a silver bullet and no I did not enjoy the transition but nothing horrible happened and around day 10 I was able to feel more hopeful as I used to. My anxiety still exists, but it is no longer excruciating and my mind doesn’t go down a rabbit hole of negative self talk.

Should you try Escitalopram?
Escitalopram is so effective because its chemical makeup has been modified to only contain its S-isomer, the isomer responsible for blocking the serotonin reuptake, and not the R-isomer that is less effective and causes side effects.
What a Lexapro (Escitalopram) Overdose Looks Like
Serotonin syndrome is a common side effect of SSRI overdose. Drugs in this class target serotonin, and when they’re taken in high doses, serotonin levels spike above the desired or healthy level. If left untreated, serotonin syndrome can be fatal. Symptoms include agitation, insomnia, confusion, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, loss of muscle coordination, and more.

StatPearls
Escitalopram, the (S)-enantiomer of citalopram, is a highly selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. Escitalopram is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treating major depressive disorder (unipolar) in adults and adolescents (ages 12 to 17) for both acute and maintenance phases. The FDA recently approved escitalopram for the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder in both adults and children aged 7 and older.
