What is it?

'What is it?' our brains want to know. Is it good, bad? It is going to kill me? What does it mean and how should I act in light of this piece of information...

This is similar to what happened to me with my long route to diagnosis of hip dysplasia. From that first groin strain I noticed when sitting cross legged on my friend's couch at 22, through to the registrar I saw four years later mumbling "yeah, it's hip dysplasia..." as he prodded the x-ray on the screen in front of us with his finger; right through to that final, fateful appointment years down the line, after three previous surgeries, when I finally received a definitive diagnosis & explaination of what I should expect in…

Why is Adolescent & Adult Hip Dysplasia so hard to diagnose? (Mark 2)

Somebody asked me a while ago "What is the one reason that people have such difficulty gaining a diagnosis of Hip Dysplasia in adolescence and young adulthood?" I found it a really hard question to answer because I don't think there is just one reason why this seems to happen, but lots of interconnecting reasons.

Adults and Adolescents can have Hip Dysplasia too

Hip Dysplasia can develop from adolescence or from a residual infant diagnosis, even if earlier treatment has been successful (Lee et al, 2013; Okano et al, 2015; Pun, 2016). Dysplasia needs to be in your differential diagnosis when seeing a young adult patient with recurring hip or groin pain.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip: What has changed in the last 20 years?

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) describes the spectrum of structural abnormalities that involve the growing hip. Early diagnosis and treatment is critical to provide the best possible functional outcome. Persistence of hip dysplasia into adolescence and adulthood may result in abnormal gait, decreased strength and increased rate of degenerative hip and knee joint disease. Despite efforts to recognize and treat all cases of DDH soon after birth, diagnosis is delayed in some children, and outcomes deteriorate with increasing delay of presentation.

Hip instability: a review of hip dysplasia and other contributing factors

Although hip instability is classically been associated with developmental dysplasia of the hip, multiple other factors may contribute to an unstable hip. In addition to acetabular bony coverage, these factors include femoral torsion, femoroacetabular impingement, and soft tissue laxity. A number of physical examination tests and radiological parameters may be used to correctly diagnose the pathology contributing to a patient’s unstable hip.

Understanding Hip Dysplasia

If you have hip dysplasia, you are not alone! Its the most common cause of hip arthritis before the age of 50. Nine out of ten cases of hip dysplasia are diagnosed during adolescence or adulthood. Doctors are more and more aware of this common condition that often escapes detection during childhood. In fact, this silent form of hip dysplasia is the reason for 5% to 10% of all total hip replacements in the USA.
