You might think you're doing your body and your health a world of good by choosing raw sugar over regulated, granulated sugar. After all, the word "raw" implies less processing and a more natural product. The truth is, raw sugar has about the same number of calories as regular sugar and offers no tangible health benefits.

Raw sugar comes from evaporated cane juice, just like white table sugar. It's made by boiling down the sap of sugar cane plants, spinning it to remove some of the molasses and then purifying it slightly. Raw sugar does go through less chemical processing than white sugar and is usually brown or yellow in color. Varieties of raw sugar include muscovado, turbinado and demerara.
