Herpangina (it’s not something on Cinemax late at night)
Now, the first thing everybody worries about is strep throat, and at times this can be very hard to tell without testing. However, when we see ulcers in the back of the throat it is most typically called herpangina (or the fancier name, enteroviral stomatitis). This is the cousin of the same virus that causes hand foot and mouth disease (Coxsackie virus). The good news is, that since this is viral, it will go away by itself (typically)… quit searching Google… and that other stuff you’ve been watching...
Remember that the only thing that you need to do for the fever is to keep them hydrated and keep them comfortable. The biggest problem with this illness is that the throat hurts so…

Herpan...what? The virus your child has likely had and you didn't even know it!
This virus is one that most parents have never even heard of, but it likely has already gone through your household or it will at some point.
Have You Ever Heard of Herpangina?
Herpangina is a disease that can affect anyone of any age, although it is most common in children under the age of 5 years old as the virus is easily spread throughout locations used to house numerous children at one time, such as school and nurseries.
Herpangina and hand, foot and mouth disease

Herpangina – A Summer Disease
While herpangina is no trip to the beach, the symptoms are kept at bay by eating cold milk things, like ice cream. Yay! And pudding, Double yay! OTC stuff like ibuprofen and Tylenol will help relieve the pain. Sometimes, we’ll even prescribe, in really serious cases, a topical pain reliever like xylocaine or benzocaine. Usually, it’s not necessary. The pain relievers and the tasty ice cream will turn the suffering dial down. Another thing some suggest is a concoction of liquid Benadryl and the antacid Maalox. They say this coats the back of the throat and eases discomfort. Discuss this with us before trying it at home. No proof on this clinically.
What is Herpangina and how parents can prevent it?
Let’s read about one such oral disease that is behind a lot of discomfort in kids.

Herpangina is an enterovirus infection – these are viruses that infect the gastrointestinal tract. Herpangina is usually spread by the faecal-oral route and the virus may continue to be excreted in the faeces long after the illness has recovered. Spread may also occur via respiratory and oral-oral routes or possibly via contaminated fomites (things such as towels, cups etc.) and fresh water. The incubation period is approximately 4 days. It is usually caused by coxsackie A16 virus and is highly contagious.

Avoid expensive throat sprays or throat lozenges. Not only are they no more effective than hard candy, but many also contain an ingredient (benzocaine) that may cause an allergic reaction.

Your job is to make sure your child drinks enough fluids.

Although herpangina is primarily a disease that affects children, adults can contract it, too. It is common for parents to contract herpangina from children who are sick, but fortunately the disease is no more severe in adults than it is in children. However, because unborn children can be affected, it can be a matter for concern if a pregnant woman contracts herpangina
ScienceDirect
Herpangina is a clinical syndrome characterized by fever, sore throat, painful swallowing, and a papulovesicular enanthem with surrounding erythema involving the fauces and soft palate.
StatPearls
Herpangina is a viral infection that is manifested clinically as an acute febrile illness with small ulcerative or vesicular lesions in the posterior oropharynx. Though primarily a pediatric disease, multiple cases in newborns, adolescents, and young adults have also been reported.
