There is considerable overlap in the appearance of photodermatitis lesions and other more commonly encountered rashes and skin changes. The rash resulting from phytophotodermatitis can be easily misdiagnosed, both because it may be relatively unknown to the emergency providers who initially see these cases and because of its relative rarity. The blistering and vesicular lesions may be mistaken for a chemical burn, and hyperpigmentation may be mistaken for bruises. Cases that have prompted suspicions of child abuse have been described.

Mexican Beer Dermatitis: Scourge Of The Beach Bum And The Proper Lady
A centuries-old skin condition -- phytophotodermatitis -- got a much cooler name this week: Mexican Beer Dermatitis. Phytodermatitis happens when lime juice on the skin meets major sun exposure. It can turn hands and arms splotchy red or brown, swell, and cause pain lasting for weeks or months. Think bartenders and vacationers mixing mojitos at beach bars without washing their hands afterward.
Drugs and the sun – your daily medications could put you at greater risk of sunburn
There are two main ways that medications can increase your risk of sunburn; a phototoxic reaction and a photoallergic reaction. A phototoxic reaction is the most common way for a medication to cause an increase in sun sensitivity.
Photodermatoses: Diagnosis and Treatment
Photodermatoses are not life-threatening but can cause considerable suffering. Prevention is just as important as treatment.
Photosensitivity diseases: a review of sun-exposed skin rashes
Numerous drugs can cause rashes in a photodistributed pattern after exposure to solar radiation. These photosensitivity reactions are subdivided into phototoxic and photoallergic reactions.
Phytophotodermatitis
Phytophotodermatitis is a cutaneous reaction resulting from the interaction between sensitizing botanical substances and ultraviolet radiation. It is a direct phototoxic reaction entirely independent of the immune system. It typically presents as a painful, erythematous and sometimes blistering rash, often in linear, streaking patterns isolated to sun-exposed areas of skin.
Phytophotodermatitis – Plants That Cause It, How to Treat It
Phytophotodermatitis (PPD) is a cutaneous phototoxic inflammatory eruption resulting from contact with light-sensitizing botanical substances and long-wave ultraviolet (UV-A 320-380 nm) radiation.
Solar Urticaria and its Impact on our Environment
The treatment of solar urticaria is considered very complex and difficult and is not entirely established. There are no guidelines for the treatment of solar urticaria.
These Common Meds Could Make You More Likely to Get Sunburned
It turns out that drug-induced photosensitivity, as it’s known in the medical world, is quite commonly associated with Accutane—a medication used to treat severe acne—but can happen while taking several types of meds, even the most basic over-the-counter drugs like Ibuprofen.
These Medications Take the Fun Out of Sun
Several broad classes of drugs increase sun sensitivity. People starting a new antibiotic should limit sun exposure when taking tetracyclines, fluoroquinolones, and sulfonamides. Antifungals, calcium channel blockers, diuretics, oral contraceptives, sulfonylurea drugs for diabetes, statins, and tricyclic antidepressants also increase the chance of getting a nasty burn...
What is a sun allergy? Learn about photosensitivity
People often feel better and happier when the sun is shining. But, for people with photosensitivity, sunlight causes health problems. Photosensitivity, also called sun allergy or photodermatoses, is an extreme sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation (UV rays) from light sources like sun exposure or tanning beds.

This is certainly a fascinating and easily missed phenomenon given its relative rarity, variable pattern of presentation and, on occasion, insidious exposures.
