Transgender Athletes & Women's Sports

Sport’s trans issue is here to stay. But at last, the debate is starting to change
Some will argue that sport is never truly fair, that Michael Phelps’s big wingspan gave him genetic advantages too. But male puberty provides such a categorical advantage – in terms of muscle mass, strength, lean body mass and bone density – that it far exceeds the advantage of a few centimetres in arm length. No magic bullet, no one-size-fits-all policy can satisfy all sides. The issue involves competing rights and strong emotions... Whatever your view, one thing is clear: this issue is not going away.

The Olympics’ transgender athlete ban is a legal and moral minefield
Based on scientific evidence, the IOC considers the presence of the SRY gene is fixed throughout life and represents highly accurate evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development. SRY stands for “sex determining region Y” gene. The presence of the SRY gene is associated with men’s typical sexual development.
Who Should Compete in Women’s Sports? There Are ‘Two Almost Irreconcilable Positions’
Some experts say inclusion and competitive fairness conflict as leaders consider how to regulate the athletic participation of transgender women.

The Olympic committee bans trans athletes from women's events, raising many questions
And while the IOC says the SRY gene "represents highly accurate evidence that an athlete has experienced male sex development," there is a lack of consensus about that in the scientific community. In fact, the scientist who discovered the SRY gene in 1990, Andrew Sinclair, has publicly opposed using the test to determine biological sex. In an op-ed published in The Conversation in 2025, after World Athletics adopted the test, he reiterated that it "isn't cut-and-dried."
Trans Athletes and Fairness
Be it resolved, safety and fairness preclude participation of trans athletes in high level women's sport.
Transgender Athletes
Be it resolved, yes you can have fair Olympics with transgender athletes competing against cisgender women.
Transgender Women Should Not Compete Against Biological Women
What surprises me the most is the complete acceptance society has taken to individuals like Lia Thomas. The same society that pushes for women’s liberation and preaches about the beauty of being a woman, allows for men to cheapen our experiences by transitioning and defeating us. Despite the ability to transition, transgender women will never understand what it means to be a biological woman. Being a woman in a combat sport has only furthered my belief that men do not belong in women’s sports.
World Athletics’ mandatory genetic test for women athletes is misguided. I should know – I discovered the relevant gene in 1990
World Athletics asserts the SRY gene is a reliable proxy for determining biological sex. But biological sex is much more complex, with chromosomal, gonadal (testis/ovary), hormonal and secondary sex characteristics all playing a role. Using SRY to establish biological sex is wrong because all it tells you is whether or not the gene is present. It does not tell you how SRY is functioning, whether a testis has formed, whether testosterone is produced and, if so, whether it can be used by the body.
A ban by World Rugby could prove influential for transgender sports
It is the latest development in a bitter argument. On October 9th World Rugby, the global governing body for rugby union, decided to bar trans women—people who are biologically male, but identify as women—from playing in the international women’s game, on the grounds that it is unsafe.

Do trans women have unfair athletic advantage?
Opinions differ on the extent to which fair competition between trans and cis female athletes is possible. But experts agree on one thing: There is a great need for further studies on the athletic performance of trans people in elite sports.
Hostility to elite trans athletes is having a negative impact on participation in everyday sport
Many of the trans women I’ve interviewed were worried that they possessed the competitive advantage so often cited in the media as the primary reason to exclude trans women from elite sport, only to find that it didn’t exist for them.

Sex differences and athletic performance. Where do trans individuals fit into sports and athletics based on current research
There are well known sex differences in parameters of physical fitness/performance due to changes occurring during sexual development. Thus, many sport and athletic events have regulations separating male and female participants. However, the inclusion or exclusion of transgender individuals in athletics has recently received outsized attention despite relatively few cases of transgender athletes. When determining which athletic gender category trans individuals should be permitted to compete in, it is important to understand the level of physical fitness/performance these individuals possess relative to their cisgender counterparts. Unfortunately, there are few studies investigating this topic, and several complications that confound this research.

Trans Girls Belong on Girls’ Sports Teams
Policies permitting transgender athletes to play on teams that match their gender identity are not new. The Olympics have had trans-inclusive policies since 2004, but a single openly transgender athlete has yet to even qualify.
Trans Inclusion & Women’s Sport
Sport is inherently physical, so the different physiologies of the sexes matters. Whilst everyone should be able to participate in sport, the Sports Councils’ Equality Group’s International Research Literature Review states “There are significant differences between the sexes which render direct competition between males and females unfair in most ‘gender-affected sports’”.
Transgender Athletes Could Be At A Physical Disadvantage, New Research Shows
Transgender athletes could be at a physical disadvantage compared to their cisgender counterparts, challenging claims that serve to exclude transgender athletes from participation in sport spaces that coincide with their gender identity, a new report suggests. A recent cross-sectional study examined the athletic capabilities and potential differences among trans and cisgender athletes
Understanding The Mental Health Of Transgender Athletes
Minority stress and discrimination play a significant role in the increased risk of various mental health conditions for trans people, which may be increased for trans athletes. Not only do transgender people face discrimination in housing, the workplace, and at school, but transgender athletes face a significant amount of discrimination in athletics.
