The Birth Control Solution
What if there were a solution to many of the global problems that confront us, from climate change to poverty to civil wars? There is, but it is starved of resources. It’s called family planning, and it has been a victim of America’s religious wars.
Partly for that reason, the world’s population just raced past the seven billion mark this week, at least according to the fuzzy calculations of United Nations demographers. It took humans hundreds of thousands of years, until the year 1804, to reach the first billion. It took another 123 years to reach two billion, in 1927. Since then, we’ve been passing these milestones like billboards along a highway. The latest billion took just a…

Bernie Was Right: Climate Change Demands Family Planning
In other words, it's not about 'population control'—a racist, classist, and ongoing form of violence—but quite the opposite: that is, giving every individual the maximum chance to decide for themselves about their bodies and lives, as well as what or whom they bring into this world, and will leave behind.
Bill Gates and Two African Billionaires Say Family Planning is Essential to Africa’s Future
As Africa’s population expands, the continent needs to create jobs and keep up with food demand, the billionaires said during a fireside chat at an event called The Future Africa Forum. Ibrahim said there is a controversial topic that can help Africa develop sustainable communities and cities: family planning.
Let Women Plan Their Futures
In Africa and around the world, women should be ensured universal access to effective contraception to avoid unplanned pregnancies and unsafe abortions and enable them to live the lives they want. Governments and employers should also make it easier for women to combine childbearing and a career. When women have the opportunity to plan their futures, everyone benefits.
After One-Child Policy, Outrage at China’s Offer to Remove IUDs
While IUDs elsewhere can often be removed with the tug of their strings in a doctor’s office, surgery is usually needed in China because most devices here are designed or altered to be more difficult to extract, some with shortened strings and others with no strings at all. But many Chinese women have chafed at the thought of the government’s getting involved, yet again, in their private lives.

Empowering women lies at the centre of controlling population growth in Africa
Population growth is a controversial topic because, in the not-too-distant past, some countries tried to control population growth with abusive, coercive policies, including forced sterilization. Now, human rights are again at the centre of the discussion about family planning, where they belong. But as part of repairing the wounds created by this history, population was removed from the development vocabulary altogether.
Freer sex and family planning: a short history of the contraceptive pill
Since the oral contraceptive pill appeared on the market almost 60 years ago, it has been the preferred form of birth control for millions of women around the world. The pill is now so widely available, it’s easy to forget that its development symbolised a revolutionary shift in family planning and women’s reproductive rights.
I Stopped Using Natural Family Planning
I don’t think NFP is the only way to go for birth control. Nor do I think it is the most virtuous. In fact, six years and a baby later, we are not using NFP, but rather a barrier method. However, the things I learned from our time of doing NFP still inform how I approach contraception and my body.
I Use Natural Family Planning as My Birth Control
Each time I wrap up an appointment at my ob-gyn's office, she consults her computerized chart and inquires, "What method of birth control are you using? Do you need a prescription?" And I smile and say, "None, no thanks!" She's always friendly about it, but I can tell she thinks I'm nuts for it. Although if I'm being totally forthcoming, I actually have a method of birth control, but it's not called birth control, per se. I practice what is referred to as Natural Family Planning.
Ladies: we deserve better than hormonal birth control
This is the best we can get? Women of today have been convinced that our fertility is broken. And so, because it is broken, we have to fix it with a birth control pill. We think that being able to conceive is a burden or a problem. So we “fix” something that isn’t broken. In no other case is this considered a good idea. You don’t spend time trying to fix something that is working properly.
Okay Then, Let’s Talk about Natural Family Planning
The thing about NFP is that you really do have to practice it perfectly. If you break the rules when you use NFP you will get pregnant. After all, the rules of NFP are this: figure out when you’re fertile, and don’t have sex during that time. If you break the rules, you are having sex when you are fertile – a perfect recipe for getting pregnant.

The Economic Case for Funding Planned Parenthood
Family-planning programs boost incomes, reduce poverty, and ease the load on America’s safety net. And yet, Republicans can’t seem to condemn them strongly enough.

The Truth About Using Natural Family Planning For Birth Control
Eight years of marriage and four children later, I think it's safe to say that my secret is out: I have never been, nor do I ever plan to be, on hormonal birth control. My reasoning for eschewing hormones isn't based in religion, but more from the plain and simple fact that I don't want to be on hormones of any kind. The idea of artificially changing my body's most primal and overreaching system (because really, our hormones control everything), freaks me the heck out and I just don't want to go there.
Why I Ditched Birth Control: Natural Family Planning
All I can tell you is thanks to NFP and the instruction I received, I know my body very well and am so thankful to be able to spot my obvious signs of fertility. Each month my husband and I can choose whether we are ready to welcome new little souls to this world.
