Placental Abruption... Say WHAT? (and a SPOILER!)
So... I have to research and know EVERYTHING about things... and it's stupid rediculous. Placental Abruptions are RARE. They happen to 1 in 100 pregnancies.. in varying degrees. Apparently, 1 in 10 premature births before 37 weeks, happen because of a placental abruption.
You can have a mild placental abruption, and have a perfectly fine baby months later. Or, you can have what I had, and have a sudden complete placental abruption, and have a still birth. Obviously, what I had is rare.. very rare. What's funny to me is the March Of Dimes list of "causes".
Got this list HERE:
- You smoke cigarettes.
- You use cocaine.
- You’re 35…

Baby Iris’s Birth Story: A placental abruption at 30 weeks
It all happened so fast. Just two weeks prior we had a perfectly normal ultrasound. As it turns out, I had a placental abruption. I have no risk factors for a placental abruption, and I will never know why this happened.
Clara’s Birth Story
Yup, the day that Clara came into the world was the most amazing life-changing day of my existence, but it was easily also the single most terrifying one.
It Felt Like I Failed My Baby
I felt like I had to justify myself when telling the story of my baby’s premature birth: “It was a placental abruption! The doctor said that they can happen out of nowhere! They have no idea what caused it!” I was worried that people would think that she was born early because I forgot to take my folic acid. Or because I dyed my hair, lugged my toddlers around, and got a pedicure. But really, in the end, no one is a superhero.
Let's Talk About...Placenta Abruption
Some form of the condition affects about one in every 150 births. In very severe forms, placental abruption can cause death to the fetus. This occurs in approximately one in every 500-750 deliveries. Death of the mother from placental abruption is very rare. Infants who survive a birth with the condition have a 40%-50% chance of experiencing complications.
Placental Abruption (Also Known As Abruptio Placentae)
Placental abruption is a relatively uncommon but serious pregnancy complication of pregnancy, affecting around 6.2 of every 1,000 pregnancies. It usually occurs between the 28th and 40th week of gestation and less frequently in the later part of the second trimester (between the 20th and 28th weeks). When it occurs, placental abruption can be sudden.
The No-Glow Pregnancy and Unexpected Birth Story
If my kids ask me this Mother’s Day to tell them the story about when they were born, I’ll just tell them the truth. Things don’t always go as planned and they are the best experiences of my life.
