Their pain will be acute, and once the cause is treated, the pain will leave. The medicine they take will only be for a short time. However, those with a chronic illness have lives that are filled with doctor’s visits, medicines, tests,…

Behcet’s is a disease most commonly found in Turkey and among other populations along the so-called Silk Road — the land route connecting Asia, where silks were made and exported for centuries, to population centers in Europe, Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. But it has also been described in other populations. There is no definitive test for Behcet’s. The diagnosis is based on the patient’s story and medical history. Persistent and frequent aphthous ulcers are essential.

Behçet’s (Beh-CHETS or Beh-SHETS) disease is an illness that causes symptoms in various parts of the body. The more common symptoms include sores in the mouth and on the genitals (sex organs). More serious symptoms can include inflammation (swelling, heat, redness, and pain) in the eyes and other parts of the body. Because it may take months or even years for all the common symptoms to appear, the diagnosis may not be made for a long time.

The first modern description was in the 1930s by a Turkish dermatologist, Hulusi Behcet, who noted the triad of aphthous oral ulcers, genital lesions, and recurrent eye inflammation. A recent consensus conference identified several criteria to establish the diagnosis.
