What is H.E.L.L.P Syndrome?
The only current cure for H.E.L.L.P syndrome is to deliver the baby. H.E.L.L.P syndrome can be difficult to diagnose, especially when high blood pressure and protein in the urine aren't present. Currently there is no screening process for those who would develop H.E.L.L.P syndrome. Due to the life-threatening nature for both mother and unborn baby when left untreated, it is important for those experiencing symptoms not to delay seeking medical advice. Hellp Syndrome Dismissed As Indigestion
After 5 days, I could no longer ignore it and went to labor and delivery to be evaluated. I never had symptoms of preeclampsia (high blood pressure, headache, swelling). My only symptoms were 5 days of worsening abdominal pain and 2 days of not being able to eat. I arrived to the hospital at midnight on 3/18. They put me on the fetal monitor and after an hour said "baby looks good, it's probably just indigestion." I was sent home without any lab work. My pain continued to worsen through the night

HELLP syndrome was named by Dr. Louis Weinstein in 1982 after its characteristics: H (hemolysis, which is the breaking down of red blood cells) EL (elevated liver enzymes) LP (low platelet count) HELLP syndrome can be difficult to diagnose, especially when high blood pressure and protein in the urine aren't present. Its symptoms are sometimes mistaken for gastritis, flu, acute hepatitis, gall bladder disease, or other conditions.
Patient
It is characterised by: •H aemolysis •EL (elevated liver) enzymes •LP (low platelet) count NB: most isolated cases of thrombocytopenia in pregnancy are due to gestational thrombocytopenia, where the platelet count falls to 7-150 x 109/L, often late in the second or in the third trimester, rather than due to HELLP.
StatPearls
The syndrome of hemolysis with a microangiopathic blood smear, elevated liver enzymes, and low platelet count, is more commonly known by the acronym HELLP syndrome in pregnant and postpartum patients. It may represent a complication or progression of severe preeclampsia; however, this relationship has been challenged by the recent evidence that these pathologies may have separate etiologies.
