How is salpingitis diagnosed?
In the ideal world, we would be able to successfully detect the infection when it is still hovering at the level of the uterine cervix, prior to its ascent towards the Fallopian tubes. Ideally this would be achieved during the routine gynecological examination. Unfortunately, the infection is only discovered when it has already been present for some time and has managed to attack one or two of the uterine tubes. In order to diagnose salpingitis, a classical gynecological examination may suffice. In the case of more subtle or "silent" infections further tests or investigations may be required...

Pelvic inflammatory disease and salpingitis...
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and more specifically salpingitis (visually confirmed inflammation) is the primary cause of tubal factor infertility and is an important risk factor for ectopic pregnancy. The risk of these outcomes increases following repeated episodes of PID.
Salpingitis Isthmica Nodosa
Salpingitis isthmica nodosa is an inflammatory process of the fallopian tubes of unknown etiology. Associations with pelvic inflammatory disease, infertility, and ectopic pregnancy have been reported. Hysterosalpingography reveals tubal irregularity and subcentimeter protrusions from the isthmic portion of the fallopian tube. The above image is a case of bilateral salpingitis isthmica nodosa.
Salpingitis: Overview of etiology and epidemiology
Current views of the etiology of salpingitis are widely divergent, partly because of epidemiologic and clinical differences in various studies. Of all genital pathogens, Neisseria gonorrhoeae has been the best documented as a cause of salpingitis, yet even the role of gonococci in salpingitis has been controversial. The proportion of salpingitis cases attributable to N. gonorrhoeae has been influenced by contraceptive usage patterns and by the racial composition of the population studied.
Understanding Salpingitis: Symptoms, Causes, and Complications
Often, cases of salpingitis are asymptomatic. They may be caught during a regular pelvic examination. When symptoms do appear, they typically begin after your period...
