To put it simply, this is just an inflammation of the urethra (the tube that carries urine from the bladder out of the body) that is caused by an infection other than gonococci (the more common infections).

Infectious urethritis has two main classifications;

  1. Gonococcal urethritis (caused by gonorrhea, also see symptoms of gonorrhoea)

I Wanna Know

Because a girl might not have any symptoms, she may not know she has NGU until severe problems occur. Girls/women might have discharge from the vagina, burning, or pain when peeing, pain in the abdominal (stomach) area, or bleeding from the vagina that is not from a monthly period. (This may be a sign that NGU has become worse and turned into Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, or PID).

American Sexual Health Association

Several kinds of germs can cause NGU, like trichomonas vaginalis or mycoplasma genitalium, but the most common cause is chlamydia. There are nonsexual causes for NGU as well, such as a urinary tract infection or catheterization. NGU is more commonly diagnosed in men than in women.

CDC

Doxycycline 100 mg orally 2 times/day for 7 days

HealthBeat

The main treatments for NGU are the antibiotics azithromycin and doxycycline.

NHS

The term non-gonococcal urethritis (NGU) is used when the condition is not caused by the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhoea. NGU is sometimes referred to as non-specific urethritis (NSU) when no cause can be found. NGU is sometimes referred to as non-specific urethritis (NSU) when no cause can be found.

WikiDoc

The terms "NGU" and "NSU" are sometimes used inconsistently, but these are the most common meanings in the modern era of treatment.
