An Antiviral Medication for Dementia?
Amantadine began its pharmaceutical life as a treatment of influenza. For decades it has been a mainstay in the management of Parkinson’s disease. It is prescribed off-label for its ability to reduce symptoms of depression, ADHD, and traumatic brain injury. But changes in how it is thought to work, in combination with clinical research, indicate it might be a powerful tool for treating Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia. Many medications wind up being used for purposes far from their original indications. Rather than viewing this as a flaw in the pharmaceutical research process, it reflects that many molecules have a multitude of ways of interacting with human bodies.

Amantadine – A Fatigue Reducer for Long COVID and ME/CFS?
It seems a bit odd that we haven’t heard much about amantadine (Gocovri, Symadine, and Symmetrel) in chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) or long COVID. They are, after all, the two big fatiguing diseases on the planet, and amantadine is the go-to drug for fatigue in another highly fatiguing disease – multiple sclerosis (MS).
Amantadine: A Comprehensive Guide to Uses and Benefits
Amantadine is a versatile medicine that has gathered thought for its reasonableness in treating a degree of disorders. Known for its different applications, it's crucial to figure out the subtleties of this medication, from its estimations to its inspirations and, incredibly, its cost. In this article, we will dive into the essential bits of amantadine, guaranteeing a no-fuss and competent assessment of the subject.
Amantadine: A Versatile Treatment for ADHD and Irritability at Mind Align Psychiatry
Amantadine's effectiveness in ADHD and mood disorders is primarily due to its inhibition of NMDA receptors and stabilization of the glutamatergic system, along with neuroprotective properties.
Amantadine: an old drug reborn
In my opinion, amantadine is the most under-appreciated, under-utilised, and under prescribed oral medication in the treatment of patients with Parkinson's disease. I applaud Olivier Rascol and colleagues1 for providing a timely update on the uses of amantadine in the treatment of Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. Their Personal View also provides insight into the reasons why amantadine is not so widely used and emphasises the fact that, even though this drug has been available for 50 years, its complex pharmacology is still not fully understood nor are the mechanisms behind its beneficial effects.
Amantadine: reappraisal of the timeless diamond—target updates and novel therapeutic potentials
Amantadine was initially developed in early 60s and registered for anti-influenza A2 activity in 1966 (Gerzon et al. 1963; Maj et al. 1974). Few years later, a woman suffering from Parkinson’s disease observed radical improvement of symptoms after taking amantadine taken for ani-viral purposes and reported it to Schwab et al. Following that, the authors performed a clinical study on 163 patients with a positive outcome (Schwab et al. 1969). Following that, he performed a clinical study on 163 patients with a positive outcome. A few years later, amantadine was registered for use in Parkinson’s disease. In the next 5 decades, there were many clinical studies of amantadine in various indications...
Parkinson’s Drug May Help With Brain Injuries, Report Finds
“The main finding is that on every single behavioral domain measured, we had a higher incidence of recovery in the amantadine group than in the placebo group,” said Dr. Giacino, who is now at Harvard’s Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital.
Revisiting amantadine as a treatment for drug-induced movement disorders
Amantadine, an aliphatic primary amine with complex actions on neurotransmitter systems in the basal ganglia, is approved for treating Parkinson’s disease and drug-induced movement disorders (DIMDs). These disorders have a significant impact on clinical outcomes and quality of life in patients receiving antipsychotic treatment.
What is Amantadine Hydrochloride used for?
Amantadine Hydrochloride is a fascinating and versatile medication that has been used for various medical conditions. Originally developed and researched in the 1960s, Amantadine Hydrochloride has undergone significant evolution in its applications and understanding within the medical community. The drug, known by trade names such as Symmetrel, is classified as both an antiviral and an antiparkinsonian agent. The primary targets of Amantadine Hydrochloride include the influenza A virus and the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain, making it effective in treating viral infections and certain neurological disorders.
What You Need to Know About Amantadine for Parkinson Disease
According to the NICE guidelines for Parkinson disease, levodopa, dopamine agonists, monoamine oxidase B inhibitors, and catechol-o-methyl transferase inhibitors, all have some benefits in improving motor symptoms. Amantadine, (amantadine), is considered to not have benefits in motor symptoms benefits, off-time, and daily activities. Amantadine is only suggested for use in dyskinesia if modifying existing therapy did not help.
Why was amantadine discontinued for flu?
Amantadine is no longer recommended for treatment of flu virus in the United States. It was only effective against influenza A viruses, but for several years, these viruses have been resistant to amantadine. This means the drug doesn’t work well against these flu viruses.

The mechanisms of its effects in movement disorders are not well understood but probably reflect an increase in synthesis and release of dopamine, with perhaps some inhibition of dopamine uptake.

StatPearls
Amantadine is an antiviral agent with mild antiparkinsonian activity. Amantadine was used in the early 2000s for Influenza A treatment. However, high levels of resistance have emerged recently, initially from Asia and now in North America. As of 2011, the CDC does not recommend treatment or prophylaxis of influenza A due to the high levels of resistance. Amantadine is now used mostly for Parkinson disease.
