Association of Guillain–Barré syndrome following COVID-19 vaccination
GBS has been observed as a rare adverse event associated with various viral vaccinations, including polio, influenza, hepatitis A and B, rabies, and the COVID-19 vaccine. During the global COVID-19 immunization campaign, several uncommon vaccine-related adverse events with the potential for fatality have been reported. These include Vaccine-Induced Thrombotic Thrombocytopenia (VITT), thromboembolic events, and GBS. The necessity of vaccinating a large population against COVID-19 to prevent severe outcomes has brought about concerns regarding the potential impact on the incidence and prevalence of Guillain–Barré syndrome. The COVID-19 vaccination has been associated with various neurological…

Guillain-Barré Syndrome Induced by Vaccination Against COVID-19: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) is a rare but serious immune-mediated neurological condition characterized by damage to the peripheral nervous system. Two-thirds of cases of GBS are diagnosed following infection; however, vaccination has also been linked to GBS pathogenesis.

Note: The Johnson & Johnson (Janssen) COVID-19 vaccine is no longer available in the U.S. In May 2023, existing doses of the J&J vaccine expired and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC) directed providers to dispose of any that had gone unused.
Real-world data on the incidence and risk of Guillain–Barré syndrome following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination: a prospective surveillance study
The overall incidence of GBS following SARS-CoV-2 vaccination was 1.42 per million doses. Viral vector-based vaccines were associated with a higher risk of GBS.
Atypical Presentation of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) with Facial Diplegia and Retained Reflexes associated with COVID-19 Infection
This case demonstrates that GBS associated with COVID-19 infection can present with isolated facial diplegia, and significant benefit can be achieved with a short course of IVIG administered at home during a pandemic.
Bell Palsy, Guillain-Barre Syndrome Rare Following COVID-19 Vaccination
The investigators noted that outcomes of GBS, Bell Palsy, and transverse myelitis following COVID-19 vaccination were “sufficiently rare.” They concluded, “[these] findings should encourage continued confidence in [COVID-19] vaccination for policy-makers, [clinicians], and the public.
Guillain-Barré and Vaccines: What You Need to Know
The link between the rare neurological disorder and the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine may be real, but the risk appears to be very small.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome and the J&J Vaccine: What to Know and What Are the Risks
A haywire immune system, attacking healthy nerves, causes the disorder. U.S. health authorities added a warning to the label of J&J’s Covid-19 vaccine after finding 100 reports.
Guillain-Barre syndrome related to SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations
There are indications that SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations can be complicated by impairment of the Central or Peripheral Nervous System. One of the most frequent PNS complications of SARS-CoV-2 vaccinations is Guillain-Barre syndrome.
Guillain-Barré Syndrome Associated with COVID-19 Vaccination
On the basis of the clinical diagnostic classification of GBS, we found that most case-patients had the classic form, followed by bilateral facial palsy with paresthesia, the paraparetic form, and GBS–Miller Fisher syndrome overlap variant.
Incidence of Guillain-Barré Syndrome After COVID-19 Vaccination in the Vaccine Safety Datalink
In this interim analysis of surveillance data of COVID-19 vaccines, findings were consistent with an elevated risk of GBS after primary Ad.26.COV2.S vaccination. No difference in GBS risk was found for mRNA vaccines. Surveillance is ongoing.
Increase in Guillain-Barré Syndrome Following AstraZeneca COVID-19 Vaccine
A correlation between a first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine and a small but significant rise in cases of the serious neurological condition Guillain-Barré syndrome, has been identified by University College London scientists, as part of an analysis of United Kingdom National Health Service (NHS) data.
Johnson & Johnson Vaccine Is Linked To Neurological Disorder In Extremely Rare Cases
In light of the newly documented risk, the Food and Drug Administration has updated the label of the vaccine to include a new warning: "Guillain-Barré Syndrome Reports of adverse events following use of the Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine under emergency use authorization suggest an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome during the 42 days following vaccination."
Neurological Complications of COVID-19: Guillain-Barre Syndrome Following Pfizer COVID-19 Vaccine
In this pandemic and with ongoing worldwide mass vaccination campaign, it is critically important for clinicians to rapidly recognize neurological complications associated with COVID-19 vaccination. We would like to highlight that the risk of neurological complications or any other adverse effect associated with COVID-19 vaccination is low and the benefits of the vaccination outweigh any potential risks or side effects, both at the individual and society levels.
No Significant Increase in Guillain-Barré Syndrome After COVID-19 Vaccination, Researchers Find
“This is important because we can say that there is no significant increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome in the population, using VAERS data,” said Mustafa Jaffry, a medical student at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and the first author on the study. “This information can help in ensuring confidence in vaccines, while approaching it from an objective, statistical analysis.”
Only Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine Associated With Guillain-Barré Syndrome
The disproportionate reporting and imbalance after Janssen vaccination led the investigators to conclude the Janssen (Ad26.COV2.S) COVID-19 vaccine was associated with an increased risk of Guillain-Barré syndrome. Notably, there was no association between mRNA COVID-19 vaccination and subsequent GBS.
Rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome, linked to COVID-19
The majority of Guillain-Barre Syndrome patients improve within a few weeks and eventually can make a full recovery. However, some patients with Guillain-Barre Syndrome have lingering symptoms including weakness and abnormal sensations in arms and/or legs; rarely patients may be bedridden or disabled long-term.
Reports of Guillain-Barré Syndrome After COVID-19 Vaccination in the United States
This study found disproportionate reporting and imbalances after Ad26.COV2.S vaccination, suggesting that Ad26.COV2.S vaccination was associated with increased risk for GBS. No associations between mRNA COVID-19 vaccines and increased risk of GBS were observed.
Study finds no link between COVID-19, Guillain-Barré syndrome
A large epidemiologic study in the United Kingdom today finds no association between COVID-19 and Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), an autoimmune condition linked to other bacterial and viral infections.
