The truth is, I don’t know how to feel…

Four years ago what I knew in my brain and my body was confirmed, I was officially diagnosed with cancer. Aggressive non-Hodgkins Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma to be specific. A blood cancer. Essentially an immune system cancer in the middle of a worldwide pandemic when a healthy immune system was, well… helpful.

What Is the Difference Between Hodgkin Lymphoma and Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma?

The two forms of lymphoma are marked by a painless swelling of the lymph nodes. Hodgkin lymphomas are more likely to arise in the upper portion of the body (the neck, underarms, or chest). Non-Hodgkin lymphoma can arise in lymph nodes throughout the body, but can also arise in normal organs. Patients with either type can have symptoms such as weight loss, fevers, and night sweats.

When to Worry About Swollen Lymph Nodes

A general rule is to give a node about two to three weeks to settle down, Dr. Ahmed says, after which point if it hasn’t shrunk, you should see a primary care doctor. They can inspect it, assess your history, and either offer treatment (say, an antibiotic or antifungal for an infection) or order testing to get to the bottom of a mysterious one.

10 Days

On Monday afternoon we went together to the Juravinski Cancer Centre (how lucky am I to have access to such an amazing facility just over ten minutes from my house?). We were told the formal diagnosis: Aggressive Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. The full pathology (there are 60 subtypes of lymphoma. A fun fact you wouldn’t know unless you have lymphoma) we wouldn’t know for several weeks. Instead of an oncologist, I have a hematologist, he specializes in blood cancers, of which lymphoma is one. Aggressive sounds scary, but it’s actually the “good kind” of Non-Hodgkins because it grows really fast (they estimated my lymphoma had been growing only for a few months) and it’s very receptive to treatment. God willing, it is sometimes considered cured. I’m praying with every fibre of my being I will be lucky enough to end up in the cured category.

A poem for Barnaby

At the age of 13, Barnaby was diagnosed with T-cell lymphoblastic lymphoma. His mum Ali wrote this poem about the ups and downs of cancer.

Ask me anything: Lymphoma

Because lymphoma can originate from different immune system cells, there are many types and subtypes. Some types are more common in different age groups.

Catching My Breath After A Lymphoma Diagnosis

Six years after my cancer battle, I reflect on an experience that I would never have imagined I would have. It has made me look at my life in a different way and I am grateful to still be here, sharing my story with others, as a source of hope.

Do Tattoos Cause Cancer?

Unfortunately, some new research suggests that tattoos could lead to an increased risk of certain types of cancers, like skin cancer and lymphoma.

Do tattoos cause lymphoma?

Recent headlines about a link between tattoos and cancer seem a lot more worrisome than warranted.

F.D.A. Won’t Ban Sales of Textured Breast Implants Linked to Cancer

Dr. Mark Clemens, a plastic surgeon and expert on the lymphoma at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, said the disease was linked exclusively to textured implants. He said there were no known cases of the lymphoma anywhere in the world in a woman who had only smooth implants. Some cases had occurred in women with smooth implants, he said, but they previously had textured ones. He described the F.D.A. as “erring on the side of being conservative.”

Goldman’s Lloyd Blankfein: How to Understand a Lymphoma Diagnosis

“Outcomes for lymphoma patients have greatly improved over the past 20 years,” said Brad Kahl, professor of medicine at Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis, Mo., and a spokesman for ASH. “This is a result of research in the field.”

I showed the world my lymphoma scars

At 22, I was diagnosed with mycosis fungoides, a kind of Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma. It is an extremely rare cancer that begins when your white blood cells develop abnormalities. It reflected on my skin as white patches. Some were soft, some scaly.

Lessons from Lymphoma -1994 to 2017

“You have Lymphoma." I didn't know what lymphoma was, but I knew that the "OMA" part was like carcinOMA and melanOMA. The surgeon quickly added, "It's not curable but very treatable." "I'll refer you to an oncologist.” Whatever it was or wasn't, I knew about oncology.

Lymphoma and the Insipid Victory

The one thing I thought I'd salvage from my cancer ordeal was a new attitude. Like anybody else, I'd heard plenty of talks and read plenty of articles from cancer survivors extoling platitudes about gratefulness and seizing days and reevaluating priorities. It's supposed to be revelatory. It turned out my particular cancer was more miserly than that.

Lymphoma overview

Most lymphoma is non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In adults, non-Hodgkin lymphoma affects males more than females. It often occurs between the ages of 60 and 70. Whites are affected more often than people of other races. Non-Hodgkin lymphoma has become more common in the past few decades. This may be related to the rise in the number of people who have a suppressed immune system, such as people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and those who have had an organ transplant and need to take drugs that alter the immune system.

Tattoos associated with a 21% greater risk of lymphoma – new study

The size of the tattoos did not seem to matter. What did matter was time - how long participants had had their tattoos. The risk seemed to be higher for new tattoos (received within two years) and for older tattoos (received more than ten years ago).

Non-Hodgkin lymphoma becomes more common as people get older. Unlike most cancers, rates of Hodgkin lymphoma are highest among teens and young adults (ages 15 to 39 years) and again among older adults (ages 75 years or older). White people are more likely than black people to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and men are more likely than women to develop lymphoma.

Doctors Ignored My Symptoms for Years Before I Was Diagnosed with Lymphoma

Most people would consider me lucky. The fact that I was diagnosed so late in the game and made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle. But I didn't come out of the journey unscathed. On top of the physical and emotional turmoil I went through, as a result of such aggressive treatment and the radiation that was absorbed by my ovaries, I won't be able to have children. I didn't have time to even consider freezing my eggs before rushing into treatment, and the chemo and radiation basically ravaged my body.
