Lisa’s Story

The word cholangiocarcinoma was not part of our vocabulary till 2010, along with words like tumor markers, bilirubin, liver panels, bile ducts and so many more words we didn’t want to know. I use the word “we” because this is a family journey. I was diagnosed with stage IV intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma at the age of 46 and given six months to live. I didn’t feel sick, so how could I be dying?

I remember the day well, I left work early to take our oldest son Jacob to see a gastroenterologist. He would soon be leaving for college, and we thought he might be lactose intolerant. The doctor, who is also a family friend, asked me how I was doing, and I said fine. He asked again and I said…

Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month

February is Gallbladder and Bile Duct Cancer Awareness Month.

Cancer Research UK

Cancer of the bile duct is a rare cancer. It is also called cholangiocarcinoma. It develops when abnormal cells grow in an uncontrolled way. Bile ducts are small tubes that connect the liver and gallbladder to the small bowel. The bile ducts carry fluid called bile which helps break down fats in food.

Cancer Support Community

Bile duct cancers have different names, depending on where they develop.

Cancer.org

Bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcinoma) can start in any part of the bile duct system. Based on where the cancers start, they're grouped into 3 types: Intrahepatic bile duct cancers Perihilar (also called hilar) bile duct cancers Distal bile duct cancers

Cholangiocarcinoma: Wayne's story

This rare cancer type grows from the bile ducts within the liver, the network of tubes that carry bile from the liver and gallbladder to the small intestine to aid digestion. Wayne’s cancer had grown from bile duct cells into a large tumor occupying most of the right part of the liver and touching many large and important veins and arteries.

National Cancer Institute

A network of tubes, called ducts, connects the liver, gallbladder, and small intestine. This network begins in the liver where many small ducts collect bile (a fluid made by the liver to break down fats during digestion). The small ducts come together to form the right and left hepatic ducts, which lead out of the liver.
