Heartburn Gave My Dad Cancer. What About the Rest of Us?
Nearly 20 years ago, my family got together in the Finger Lakes region of New York for Thanksgiving. The last night of our trip, we went out to a local tavern for dinner. I can’t remember if my father ordered fried shrimp or fried chicken. I do remember he didn’t eat it because he said he didn’t feel well. When I looked at him across the table, he looked gray.
As I approach the age at which my father died, I fear the thing that got him will get me. That’s because I, too, suffer from acid reflux — and so do many other Americans.
Afterward, my parents returned to their home in Florida, and about two months later, in February of 2001, my father had trouble swallowing a glass…

There have also been some important research developments in recent months on immunotherapy treatments for esophageal cancer. Researchers at Weill Cornell Medicine reported in December that a study on an immunotherapy drug provides some hope for people with a type of esophageal cancer that is aggressive and very difficult to treat.

Fisher began treatment with traditional chemotherapy and radiation for several years, but there was no change to her tumor. Kachaamy presented another option, truFreeze, which was spray cryotherapy targeted at the tumor in her throat. After three treatments, Kachaamy said Fisher’s tumor began responding, and eventually, it was small enough to be surgically removed.
Test for esophageal cancer could save millions of lives
A Johns Hopkins researcher who has devoted his career to the detection and prevention of esophageal cancer today published a paper in the journal Clinical Cancer Research that he says could finally result in simple and inexpensive screening for the deadly disease.

Cancer Risk From Barrett’s Esophagus Lower Than Thought
But the new study found that the risk of esophageal cancer in Barrett’s patients was only about a fifth of what is currently believed. That suggests that the routine tests and endoscopies patients are subjected to may not be necessary in many cases, said Dr. Peter Funch-Jensen, a professor of surgery at Aarhus University in Denmark and an author of the study, which was published this week in The New England Journal of Medicine.
Current Treatment of Esophageal Cancer and Promising Clinical Trials Underway
The treatment of squamous esophageal tumors has not changed much over the last 30 to 40 years and consists primarily of chemotherapy. However, newer options such as targeted therapy, anti–vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) receptor antibodies, and immunotherapy may have the potential to alter the standard of care.
Esophageal cancer survivors share stories
It’s called the “silent killer” because by the time esophageal cancer is diagnosed the National Cancer Society estimates that the survival rate is an average of five years. Both Jack Brady and Mary Helen Duggar have beaten those odds.
Esophageal Cancer: A Disease on the Rise
Unfortunately, the disease does not produce many symptoms in its early stages and thus goes undetected. Large, advanced tumors may cause weight loss, difficulty swallowing, or evidence of blood in stool or vomit.
Finding, and Treating, Esophageal Cancer
Diagnosed early, well before patients develop swallowing problems, esophageal cancer is usually curable. A cure is most certain if the problem is detected and corrected before or during the advanced precancerous stage. But for about 90 percent of patients, early detection and treatment are missed, and the outcome is fatal.
Oesophageal cancer rates are rocketing - here’s what you need to know about the disease
Unfortunately, many people don’t recognise the symptoms. Heartburn, hoarseness and difficulty swallowing are often dismissed by patients as “nothing serious”. Usually, by the time the patient has more severe symptoms, such as weight loss, vomiting or coughing up blood, the disease has already progressed quite far.

Esophageal Cancer Action Network
Like so many organizations fighting deadly disease, the impetus to establish ECAN began with profound grief and frustration. In 2007, John “Monte” Mordecai was diagnosed with a later stage of esophageal cancer. While Monte and his Johns Hopkins physicians waged a brave battle that included every treatment modality available, his elder daughter wanted to fight his disease as well. A 12-year-old dancer, Mara Mordecai decided she wanted more people to understand that something as common as heartburn could lead to something as deadly as her father’s disease. From that desire, an event and non profit corporation known as Dance for the Cure was born.

Cancer Treatment Centers of America
Esophageal cancer is a complex disease that develops when cancer forms in the esophagus, which is the hollow, muscular tube connecting the throat to the stomach. This type of cancer is rare, accounting for only about 1 percent of all cancers diagnosed in the United States. But several factors increase the risk of developing this type of cancer, including alcohol and tobacco use, obesity and persistent acid reflux.
