CBN (Cannabinol)

Think of CBN like a mellowed-out THC; it won't have the intoxicating effects (e.g. the head high, altered mental state, intense relaxation) that THC does - Dominique Michelle Astorino

The Truth About CBN – Cannabinol

It’s no secret that our beloved herb holds over 100 different cannabinoids in trace amounts. Give those traces to a scientist and interesting things will happen. You might be surprised to learn that cannabinol (CBN) is the first phytocannabinoid ever to be isolated back in 1896. It was rediscovered in 1940 and erroneously classified as the primary psychoactive component of cannabis. But twenty-four years later, in 1964, Yechiel Gaoni and Raphael Mechoulam isolated THC and realized that its aged counterpart, CBN (cannabinol), had no psychoactive effects. This mildly intoxicating compound was more than just a useless byproduct of stale weed; it was a valuable cannabinoid that held many benefits.

Everything you need to know about CBN and why it's not the same as CBD

The CBN cannabinoid was derived over a century ago but since it was a complex cannabinoid and the isolation process was even more complicated, CBN was often overlooked while THC and CBD were deeply researched and promoted. Even to this day only a limited number of researchers have dedicated their time and resources to researching CBN. But fortunately the trend is changing and more research is being put into CBN to identify all of its potential uses and wellness benefits.

What is CBN?

There's often a misconception that CBN is the "sleep cannabinoid." There's very little evidence to prove that the CBN cannabinoid has sedative qualities by itself—you should be wary of products that claim to have sleep-supporting benefits with CBN isolate.

What Is CBN? Benefits, Risks And Where To Buy

CBN forms when THC degrades due to exposure to heat, air and/or light. “This is why higher levels of CBN can be found in aged, dry cannabis,” says Eric Adams, CEO, president and director of InMed Pharmaceuticals, a manufacturer and developer of rare cannabinoids. However, CBN isn’t known to cause the intoxicating psychoactive effects associated with THC.

Cannabis compound shows initial promise in reducing sleep disturbances

This study is a significant step forward in understanding the potential of CBN as a treatment for sleep disturbances. While the results indicate that 20 mg of CBN can reduce nighttime awakenings and overall sleep disturbances, more research is needed to determine the optimal dosage and long-term effects. Additionally, the unexpected lack of benefit from combining CBN with CBD highlights the need for further investigation into how different cannabinoids interact to influence sleep.

Cannabis products are being sold as sleep remedies – here’s the evidence about their effectiveness

Although the review found a lack of evidence to support the sedative properties of CBN, scientists have found that medicinal cannabis containing THC and CBD can improve sleep for people with chronic pain. This benefit decreases, however, for people using these products regularly, as their tolerance to medicinal cannabis builds.
