Omeprazole (Prilosec)

The FDA never should’ve allowed PPIs to be sold over-the-counter, and they should be taken off the shelves now. Regardless, you should get off PPIs – but you need to taper off - Jamie Koufman MD

The conventional medical community got stomach acid wrong - I'd get off of that Prilosec if I were you

Those poor blokes who took a stab at solving GERD and reflux with Prilosec deserve some credit. They understood that acid was involved, but unfortunately, they miscalculated the foundational importance it played in our physiological health.

Often, righting the stomach acid ship is a moment of true glory for those suffering from chronic health symptoms. For myself, I call it the Gettysburg in the war I won (am currently winning) against my autoimmunity.

Nexium vs Prilosec: Are These PPIs Safe To Take?

PPIs should not be sold over-the-counter, and based on the currently available data, the Food and Drug Administration should strongly consider taking PPIs off the market altogether.

Effectiveness of Omeprazole in Acid Peptic Disease: A Real-World, Patient-Reported Outcome Measures Study

Omeprazole therapy is safe and effective for the treatment of APD and shows good improvement in APD in patients suffering from duodenal ulcers, gastric ulcers, and reflux oesophagitis.

From The $800 Million Pill - Me Too!

Instead of pursuing this potential cure for ulcers, Astra scientists launched Operation Shark Fin, an effort to find a drug to replace Prilosec after it came off patent and became generically available. At first they tried drug combinations and oral suspensions, but they didn't work any better and were less convenient. Finally, Astra scientists created a molecule that was, in essence, half of Prilosec. They dubbed it Nexium. In doing so, they used a process that by the late 1990s had become one of the drug industry's chief strategies for extending patents, a strategy that was garnering an increasing share of industry research-and-development budgets.

Generic Prilosec - the Sequel

The sequel to the Prilosec (omeprazole) patent case (see the October 13 post) is an interesting one. The only company to prevail against AstraZeneca's patents on their tablet coating was a small one, Schwarz Pharma.

Hard to Swallow

Prilosec was invented in 1979 at AstraZeneca's lab in Gothenburg, Sweden. As the first in a revolutionary class of medicines that enter the bloodstream, then travel deep into the cells of the stomach lining to block the secretion of gastric acid, it proved far more potent than earlier drugs such as Zantac. But there was a problem: The compound was unstable in acid.

How Long Does Omeprazole Take to Work?

You should start feeling the benefits of omeprazole within 2-3 days, and most people find that their symptoms have significantly subsided by 4 weeks. However, if you feel that you are still struggling, speak to your doctor, who may be able to look at an alternative dosage or a completely different treatment entirely.

Omeprazole

Inhibit both fasting and meal-stimulated secretion by irreversibly inhibiting H+/K+ ATP pump in parietal cells.

Omeprazole has ruined my life

I really regret taking prilosec, i fell ill with a virus last december that caused gastroenteritis (severe acid reflux and diarrhea).. i was told to take omeprazole for 14 day treatment.. at the time i did not experience any side effects so after the 14 day treatment was over, about a week later i experienced acid rebound that sent me to the ER. The er dr said i needed to up the dose to 40 mg 2x/day... and this is when i became more ill..

Pantoprazole vs. omeprazole: which should you take?

Pantoprazole relieves your symptoms within 24 hours after the initial dose. Additionally, it continues to act for roughly 7 days after the last dose. Omeprazole however begins to work about one to two hours after the first dose, although you might not feel much better until about five complete days of treatment. Contrary to pantoprazole, its impact only lasts for about three days following the final dose.

The 5 most frequent errors when taking omeprazole

1. Taking it with food. It should be taken half an hour before breakfast and/or the evening meal. 2. Taking it with antibiotics or anti-inflammatories. Only under a doctor's instructions. 3. Taking it with milk, fizzy drinks or juices. It should not be taken with these liquids as they can disrupt its absorption. 4. Breaking open the capsule and dissolving in water. This makes it lose its properties. 5. Prolonged use. Omeprazole may affect vitamin B12 absorption, be harmful to memory, reduce the absorption of some anticoagulants and highten the effect of some anti-depressive and anti-epileptic drugs.

The Omeprazole (Prilosec/Losec) Epidemic & Infant Reflux - Risks & Benefits

So we have it seems, very little evidence demonstrating omeprazole is effectively resolving the symptoms parents seek help for, even if acid levels are reduced in a lab.

StatPearls

Omeprazole therapy should be at the lowest dose possible for the shortest duration; physicians have looked into deprescribing proton pump inhibitors if patients are on it long-term. One group recommends deprescribing PPIs, meaning reducing the dose, stopping completely, or using "on-demand" dosing in adults who have completed a minimum of 4 weeks of PPI treatment for heartburn or mild to moderate gastroesophageal reflux disease or esophagitis and who have achieved symptomatic resolution.
